Mod 0 Career Development

What is your greatest strength and how do you know?

  • My greatest strength is my adaptability. I can be a leader or a follower, I can take direction or give creative ideas. I find new challenges and solving puzzles fun, which has made it is for me to change to whatever environemnt or task I go up against. I also know how to adapt to not being in charge. Some of this I got out of doing improv comedy. You don't always have the best ideas, but someone else might! At the end of the day, what is important is that the group succeeds.

How do you work best?

  • I work best in a group of individuals. What I mean is, as a group we decide what is needed, then split off to work on our own parts of the project. If anyone has a problem or question, we all give input, but for the most part work is completed individually. I think this lends well to a career in programming and web development as there are lots of times that you will be on your own just plugging away at what you are coding.

What is your greatest area of improvement?

  • I think my greatest area of improvement would be in decision making. I have a tendancy to ruminate and circulate an idea, find multiple different possible options, but have issues actually getting started. Make a decision, go with it, deal with problems once they come up. Analysis Paralysis is a real thing, and I am all too familiar with it. I have to learn to trust my gut and just get moving.

How do you hope to maximize your strengths for your new career in software development?

  • I hope to maximize my strengths by constantly learning, even after I get the job. That is one of the things that makes me interested in Development is there is always something new and interesting to keep you going out and learning more. I have always thirsted for knowledge, and enjoy learning new things whether technical, political, crafty, musical...the list goes on.

How might knowing about your strengths and working preferences benefit you as a software developer?

  • I think it helps to know them for finding a job culture that matches best. Someone who works best thinking freely and working independantly will not do well with a manager who is constantly hovering over head. It helps to know how you work best so that you can either convey that to a supervisor or make sure you are set up in an environment that will work well for you.
