Welcome attendees? Privacy peep?
So you’ve signed up to CryptoAUSTRALIA’s Raspberry Pi (RPi) Pi-hole workshop.
To get the most out of the workshop, there are some items you should bring along. You’ll be in of of two categories:
1. Raspberry Pi owners bringing along a RPi to configure
2. Not bringing a Raspberry Pi, but want to get the most out of the workshop. You may own a RPi or not bringing it along (because it’s powering your kegerator: https://philsprojects.wordpress.com/2014/03/10/smart-kegerator/ )
Raspberry Pi owner bringing their RPi
-----------------------------------------------
Make sure you come to the workshop with the following:
- A Raspberry Pi, we recommend you use an RPi which has a wired ethernet adapter https://learn.adafruit.com/assets/2920 . It will also help if you know the MAC address of your RPi before the workshop. You may also want to label your RPi if it’s generic looking so it doesn’t get lost.
- A micro USB cable to power your RPi. Access to AC power may be limited on the day, so bring a battery pack if you can, or make sure you have a micro USB cable which draws enough power from your laptop. You can always buy a USB Y cable: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/705-53470-19255-0/1?icep_id=114&ipn=icep&toolid=20004&campid=5338207035&mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com.au%2Fitm%2FUSB-2-0-Female-to-2-Dual-USB-Male-Power-Adapter-Y-Splitter-Cable-Cord-Connector%2F321396229146
- A spare SD /micro card which is at least 2GB in size. We also recommend that you preload it with Raspbian Stretch Lite https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/ If you don’t know how to do this, it’s OK! We can help you on the day of the workshop.
- Your laptop with a SD card reader/micro SD card reader.
- Ethernet cable ( we will have have some cables on the day, but incase we run out)
Not bringing a Raspberry Pi
-----------------------------------
Make sure you come to the workshop with the following:
- Laptop running the latest version of VirtualBox (preferred) or VMware Fusion: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
- VM Images downloaded on your computer:
* Virtualbox: https://s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/dl.cryptoaustralia.org.au/workshops/Raspbian.ova?torrent
* VMware Fusion: https://s3-ap-southeast-2.amazonaws.com/dl.cryptoaustralia.org.au/workshops/Raspbian-vmware.ova?torrent
- A USB condom (https://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/705-53470-19255-0/1?icep_id=114&ipn=icep&toolid=20004&campid=5338207035&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com.au%2Fitm%2FPortaPow-Fast-Charge-Data-Block-USB-Adapter-with-SmartCharge-Chip%2F172928867761) if you have trust issues with USB sticks we hand out to copy images from.
If you don’t own an RPi, but are keen to get one before the workshop, Little Bird Electronics is a local supplier in Hornsby, they’re offering 10% off with the code 10OFFLBE for a minimalist setup, get yourself a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B and a case. You should also check out RS Components http://au.rs-online.com/web/p/processor-microcontroller-development-kits/1228913/ and Element 14 http://au.element14.com/buy-raspberry-pi
