Community Involvement
There are a couple of software engineer groups that I'm pretty active in. One of those is Brilliant Black Minds, which mainly focuses on helping current or prospective Black software engineers gain experience with technical interviews. They also have meetups and talks with industry professionals to provide insights on job operations, building networks, and overall work/life balance, as many of these spaces are underrepresented by minorities. I'm also a member of Blacks In Technology. We have quite a few chapters around the United States and many different countries. I plan to attend these member meetups and take advantage of the available resources.
What are you looking to get from being part of a community?
I'm looking forward to being in these spaces to have support for doing my job well and progressing my career. Additionally, being a mentor is something I strive for, and I believe these groups will help me gain the experience necessary to be an effective mentor.

Im an Apprentice!

I am one of many individuals entering this field that landed at software development after a tough decision for a career change. I spent my time in the nonprofit world at the local YMCA climbing the ladder and learning about the organization, my community and most importantly myself.

After the constant battle with the little person on my shoulder about diving off into the tech industry, I finally took the plunge and signed up for a boot camp. It was everything I knew it would be. Satisfying, frustrating, exhausting and thrilling all at the same time. I knew I made the right decision. However, I learned more about what I don’t know and the steep climb to understand this world made the job search daunting. I knew I needed experience but gigs and working for free was not something my life could afford.
