This is the protocol for my sleep experiment that I will start on 2020-04-30. I will not sleep for 75 hours and will evaluate the effects of doing so on my cognition using SAT (a 3-hour test that involves reading and math), and Aimgod custom scenario I called guzey_arena_0.

Methods

I'm going to remain inside throughout the experiment.

I will work, play video games, watch movies, browse the internet, read, walk around the apartment, do sports, and try to stimulate myself in other ways. However, I will not use any medications and any psychoactive drugs (caffeine, nicotine, etc.). I also did not use any caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and/or medications in the 2 weeks before the experiment.

I do not have any medical or psychiatric disorders, aside from occasionally experiencing stress-related strain in my chest, and I will write down any unusual symptoms I experience during the experiment. I will terminate the experiment in case of a medical emergency.

I will eat without restrictions.

During the last ~11 hours of the experiment my wife is going to be making sure I don't fall asleep.

Structure of the experiment

Adaptation: days -7 to -1 (2020-04-25 to 2020-05-01)

I will give myself a sleep opportunity of 8 hours (23:30-07:30) for 7 days prior to the experiment to make sure I don't have any sleep debt carried over. My average sleep duration in these days was INPUT.

Sleep deprivation: 2020-05-01 7:00 to 2020-05-04 10:15 (UTC+3) (75 hours 15 minutes)

I will attempt to take the SAT at hour 72 (SAT lasts 3 hours 15 minutes). I will stream the attempt live.

I will take 32 treatment samples of guzey_arena_0 at hours 62, 65, 68, 71.

Controls for guzey_arena_0: I will take 32 samples of guzey_arena_0 at 13:00 and 19:00 on 2020-05-01 (6 and 12 hours into the experiment) and at 13:00 and 19:00 on 2020-05-08 (3 days after the end of the experiment)

Recovery: starting 2020-05-04 10:15 until 2020-05-08 13:00 sleep will not be restricted

My hypotheses, the rationale behind sample sizes and data analysis

In contrast to my 14 days of 4 hours of sleep a nigh experiment, I hypothesize that I will not be able to stimulate myself with video games sufficiently to counteract sleepiness and that my guzey_arena_0 performance will deteriorate.

I do not know what will happen to the SAT and if I'm going to be functional enough to even attempt it but I will do my best.

I will only test one statistical hypothesis: that my guzey_arena_0 performance in control condition is different from treatment condition.

128 pairs will enable me to detect effect size of 0.25 at 0.05 alpha and 0.8 power for a paired t-test against a two-sided alternative.
