{'body': '
It is a sad statement about either American politics or American sanity that when today\'s jobs report showed the unemployment falling below 8% for the first time in Obama\'s presidency, the reaction from some administration critics was: The numbers are cooked!

The conspiracy claims are beyond silly, as my colleague David Graham explained today. But the employment-truthers are right about one thing. No number in this jobs report is to be trusted.

Not a single one.

Unfortunately, the reason why isn\'t a cover-up that reaches into the highest levels of government. There\'s a more prosaic reason you should be wary about the precise numbers of each jobs report. They represent a statistical estimate that will be repeatedly revised. Just about every number in today\'s jobs report will probably change in the next few months.

The proof that you shouldn\'t trust any initial number from the Bureau of Labor Statistics is right here ... in today\'s report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics!

The change in total nonfarm payroll employment for July was revised from +141,000 to +181,000, and the change for August was revised from +96,000 to +142,000.

The BLS is telling us, basically, that its first guesses for job creation in July and August were really wrong. In fact, 86,000 people got jobs that weren\'t counted at first.

When the BLS releases initial job creation figures, its "confidence interval" for each monthly change is plus- or minus-100,000 jobs. We\'re only creating 150,000 jobs a month. The confidence interval is two-thirds our monthly job creation!

That\'s not all. Every year, the BLS announces an even bigger whoopsies. In its annual "benchmark revision" released two weeks ago, the agency reported that the economy had created a whopping 450,000 jobs more than previous estimates in the last year. That figure could be revised again before next year, but for now, BLS is admitting that its estimates have been off by an average of 37,000 jobs per month. That\'s a big deal.

These revisions on top of revisions on top of revisions tell us two things.

First, counting jobs in a labor force of 150 million is hard stuff. The BLS uses two surveys -- one that polls employers and counts jobs, and another than polls households and calculates the unemployment rate. Sometimes the surveys sing in unison. Sometimes merely in close harmony. But other times, they scream inconsistencies at each other. Still, after a few corrections, they usually offer a fairly clear picture of the economy.

Second, exactly because counting jobs is hard, corrections can swing wildly and change our impression of the economy\'s health. So don\'t put too much faith or attach too much significance to one set of numbers. Reach back a few months. Seek the rolling trends.

And remember: Just last year, we first thought we created a grand total of zero jobs in August. Zero. This game could end up being one of the more entertaining contests on the NFL’s Week 5 schedule, or it could be one of the more boring depending on the perspective.

The Seahawks\' formula for success is easy: Run the ball, protect the ball and play solid defense. Behind Marshawn Lynch, rookie quarterback Russell Wilson and an aggressive front seven, it seems to be working so far.

The 2-2 record should actually be 1-3, since Seattle was handed the Green Bay game by the replacement referees. But don’t let that fool you; the Seahawks are a very solid team and should remain competitive throughout the entire season.

The Panthers, however, are struggling and should be looking forward to the bye week after this game. Cam Newton’s sophomore slump is legit and he is letting it get to him, as evidenced by his uninspiring press conference after Week 3’s 36-7 loss to the New York Giants.

Things won’t get much easier for Carolina after their break though with the Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, Washington Redskins and the Denver Broncos on the horizon, especially if the defense continues to struggle.

Here is one bold prediction for each team in Sunday’s matchup.

Marshawn Lynch Runs for 150 Yards and 2 Touchdowns

The Seahawks are sixth in the NFL in rushing at 150.8 yards game and rely heavily on Marshawn Lynch to carry the offensive load. With Wilson at the helm, Seattle is definitely approaching this season and the offense the right way.

Lynch leads the league in rushing yards with 423 yards and is second only to Arian Foster in carries with 92. The Panthers allow 134.8 rushing yards per game, so Lynch should be able to find plenty of space to run on Sunday afternoon.

This game should be played at a slow pace, especially if Seattle wants to steal one on the road. If it plays out as such, Lynch could see a lot more work than usual and rack up some serious stats along the way.

Cam Newton Scores on 50-Yard Touchdown Run

Newton is actually tied with DeAngelo Williams as the Panthers’ leading rusher with 167 yards. The quarterback’s three touchdowns also lead the team.

The second-year signal-caller is arguably the most dynamic player in the NFL. But his struggles and how he is dealing with his down year have some pulling back their positive judgment on Newton early on this season.

Seattle is actually second in the league against the run, allowing only 62.8 yards per game on just three yards per carry. But the Seahawks have yet to face a team with such a talented backfield.

One play may be all it takes to pull Newton from his funk. As aggressive as the Seahawks are in the trenches, the quarterback could find a lot of open space in the second and third levels of Seattle’s defense.

Contact Jeremy at jeremy@popflyboys.com and follow him on Twitter @KCPopFlyBoy
', 'content_type': 'article', 'rss_date': 1349473065}

The offseason is over and the regular season is about a month away, so there really isn\'t much else to talk about.

So, all you need is a slightly controversial remark from a well-known NBA player, and you have the formula for overreaction to the max.

So Garnett doesn\'t want to talk to Allen anymore. Okay? And? They are not on the same team anymore. Not only that, but they are on opposite ends of what is the greatest rivalry in the sport today. Why should K.G. want to bother with Ray?

This is just not sour grapes on Garnett\'s part. This is a competitive fire that has burned in K.G. throughout his entire career. It is that same fire that is missing from so many professional athletes these days.

Garnett isn\'t like LeBron James or Kevin Durant. He does not want to be buddies with his opponents off the court. It\'s not that there is anything wrong with what James and Durant did by working out together this offseason, but it just demonstrates how much the NBA has changed over the years.

Can you envision Michael Jordan and Isiah Thomas pairing up to work out during the summer months? Of course you can\'t, because it would have never happened. There was a legitimate dislike between rivals back then. You were not supposed to rendezvous with the enemy.

K.G. epitomizes that old-school mentality, a mentality that few other players in the league seem to possess these days. Kobe Bryant is one of those few. That\'s why it makes it so difficult not to admire his game. Even if you absolutely despise the Los Angeles Lakers, you have to have some sort of respect for the way that Bryant carries himself.

I actually like what Dwyane Wade said in response to Garnett\'s comments, saying how K.G. doesn\'t need to be talking to Miami Heat players anyway. He\'s right. I highly doubt Wade wants much to do with the likes of Garnett and Paul Pierce, so why should K.G. want anything to do with Allen? They were teammates. Were. Past tense. Now they are enemies.

That\'s why I hardly classify this as a "feud." There is nothing personal between Garnett and Ray. It\'s the simple fact that they are on the top two teams in the East, and will be battling for conference supremacy all season long. It\'s not a feud; it\'s competition.

Like it or not, this is what the NBA is missing today. Outside of the Boston Celtics and the Heat, there really is no genuine rivalry. The days of the \'80s Celtics and Lakers and the \'90s New York Knicks and Heat were long gone before these two clubs met in the playoffs the past three years (two with LeBron in Miami, though) to rekindle that spark. We as fans should want it this way.

We shouldn\'t see James and Durant being all buddy-buddy, and I think Durant is the one who should be chastised the most here. You just lost to LeBron in the Finals. You didn\'t just lose, either. You were obliterated in the deciding Game 5. And then, you go and work out with him? Why not work out with Russell Westbrook and James Harden? They are your teammates, after all.

The funniest thing about all of this? Durant is actually aiding James in making him better. That is just unfathomable to me.

I hate to say that Durant doesn\'t "get it," because he is a genuinely nice guy and you do have to appreciate that as a fan. What I will say is that Garnett doesn\'t get that; he doesn\'t understand how you can possibly spend that much time with your enemy.

In conclusion, I\'ll just say that there really is nothing to see here. If K.G. said what he said back in the \'90s, nobody would give it a second thought. It would just be seen as standard procedure. It might even be seen as a soft comment.

But in this new era, it is viewed as going too far. It is perceived as words coming out of the mouth of a scorned individual.

Garnett knows that isn\'t the case.

So does Jordan.
', 'content_type': 'article', 'rss_date': 1349473022}

Friday, the first-ever wild card games will be played in Texas and Atlanta. There are some familiar faces returning to the postseason such as the Yankees, Tigers, Rangers, Giants and Cardinals.

But with these traditional contenders come some surprise teams that are trying to prove they belong with the big boys. Baltimore, Oakland, Washington and Cincinnati all made the playoffs after losing seasons in 2011.

But who will get through the grueling path of October baseball? Can the Cardinals bring back their postseason magic of last year and repeat as champions? Will one of the powerhouses reign supreme once again? Or will one of the surprise teams crash the party and cap off an already amazing season?

Here are my predictions as to who will hoist the Commissioner\'s Trophy in November.

Wild Card Games

In the first wild-card matchup, I think the Braves will defeat the Cardinals in a low-scoring affair. It will be a pitcher\'s duel between Kyle Lohse and Kris Medlen. Both had double-digit win seasons and ERAs under two. St. Louis has the stronger lineup, but Medlen will shine in his postseason debut and lead the Braves to a 3-1 victory.

In the second wild-card game, I like the Rangers to beat the Orioles, ending Baltimore\'s dream season. As hot as the Orioles have been, they probably would have matched up better against Oakland. The Rangers, as bad as they\'ve been playing lately, are still one of the most talented teams in baseball. Their lineup is one of the deepest in the league, and they will surely find a way to get to Joe Saunders, who has a 4.07 ERA. Yu Darvish will pitch well enough to win, and Texas will survive 7-4.

Divisional Round

Braves vs. Nationals

If the Braves were to win the first game, they will most likely start Tim Hudson for Game 1 followed by Tommy Hanson in Game 3 and possibly go to Medlen on four days of rest. Paul Maholm and Mike Minor are also viable options.

Washington will be well-rested, and Gio Gonzalez will get the Game 1 start for the Nats. Washington could go to a four-man rotation with Gonzalez, Jordan Zimmermann, Edwin Jackson and Ross Detwiler. The Nationals hit 192 home runs, which was second in the NL, to go along with a pitching staff that led the NL in ERA and had the third-most strikeouts. Atlanta\'s offense isn\'t as impressive, but they make up for it with some pretty good pitching. The Braves pitching staff accumulated a 3.42 ERA and led the league in shutouts.

The biggest question will be whether the Nationals can make a run at the title without Stephen Strasburg. A championship may be a stretch, but I like Washington to get past Atlanta in four games.

Giants vs. Reds

This will be a series about pitching. Cincinnati\'s rotation is one of the most underrated in the game. Led by ace Johnny Cueto, the Reds were tied for second in the NL in ERA. Don\'t sleep on Mat Latos either; he went 14-4 with a 3.48 ERA and could be a crucial pitcher for the Reds in the postseason.

The Giants pitching staff is great as well. Matt Cain will start the series for San Francisco, and Madison Bumgarner and Ryan Vogelsong should both make an impact for the Giants. There isn\'t much great to say about the lineups. Both the Giants and Reds are middle-of-the-pack in runs scored. San Francisco has a considerably better batting average than Cincinnati, but the Giants have only hit 103 homers this year. Joey Votto and Buster Posey will be relied on heavily to be big-time producers in this series.

These two teams are both very even, but I like San Francisco\'s rotation just a little bit more than Cincinnati\'s. I\'m taking the Giants in five, with a complete game from Matt Cain clinching the series.

Rangers vs. Yankees

The World Series champion could be decided in this series. This series will feature the top two offenses in the league. Texas holds slight edges in total runs scored and batting average, but the Yankees own the lead in home runs and on-base percentage.

The Yankees lineup has been injured all season, and Joe Girardi has been switching his lineup since the spring. The Yankees will most likely start CC Sabathia, Hiroki Kuroda and Andy Pettitte in games 1-3. The question is whether Phil Hughes or Ivan Nova will make it a four-man rotation.

Texas\'s rotation has been inconsistent all season, and they acquired Ryan Dempster in July. Dempster, despite stellar numbers in Chicago, struggled at times with the Rangers. Yu Darvish is starting the Wild Card game, so Ron Washington would have to choose between Dempster, Derek Holland and Matt Harrison to be his Game 1 starter.

Both these offenses can score and score often, but I\'ll take Sabathia, Kuroda and Pettitte over Dempster, Darvish, Harrison and Holland. I\'m taking the Yankees in six games.

Athletics vs. Tigers

I had to double check this before typing it because it\'s still so surprising. The A\'s made up a 13-game deficit to overcome the Rangers and win the AL West. The Tigers were up and down all season but made a push during the final month of the season to steal the AL Central from the White Sox.

The A\'s lineup is nothing special. They have a .238 batting average, which is second to last in the AL, but can hit the long ball with 195 home runs. Their lineup is very balanced, but Yoenis Cespedes is the guy to look out for on the A\'s roster.

Detroit\'s lineup is led by Prince Fielder, Miguel Cabrera and Austin Jackson. Cabrera is coming off of a season where he was the 10th player in league history to hit for the Triple Crown. Cabrera and Fielder are arguably the scariest 3-4 duo in the playoffs. The A\'s and Tigers\' pitching staffs are the second- and third-best rotations in the league respectively. The A\'s are led by Jarrod Parker and Tommy Milone, but Detroit has the best pitcher in the series in Justin Verlander.

Detroit may have the star power, but Oakland is the hottest team in the majors. Oakland will find a way to win this series in five games.

League Championship Round

Giants vs. Nationals

This will be a competitive series. Both offenses are very even in runs scored and batting average. The Giants\' lack of home-run hitters could be their downfall if they cannot manufacture runs. Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval will have to be hitting well if the Giants are to win this series.

It will be interesting to see Bryce Harper in the brightest of lights, but look for Ryan Zimmerman to be the spark of the offense. This series will be a great pitchers\' series. I\'m hoping we get to see a Gonzalez and Cain matchup at least once during the series.

San Francisco\'s pitching staff is top-notch, and if Vogelsong and Bumgarner can continue their great seasons, the Nationals may have trouble scoring runs.

If Strasburg is pitching in this series, I\'d take the Nationals. But he isn\'t, and San Francisco\'s depth in the rotation will make the Nats question their decision to shut Strasburg down. I like San Francisco to make it in six games.

Athletics vs. Yankees

The battle of the payrolls. Billy Beane\'s Oakland Athletics will hope to ride its storybook season into the sunset with a title. To get a chance to do that, they\'ll first have to get past the high-spending Yanks.

Earlier in the season, the A\'s began to draw attention with their four-game sweep of the Yankees. The Yankees have the far superior offense, but the rotations are even. The A\'s have the edge in ERA and batting average against, but the Yankees struck out more hitters and surrendered fewer walks. The Yankees are the deeper team offensively, but the A\'s are the hottest team in the game and are tough to pick against.

The Yankees depth is too good to pass up. Oakland may be the hottest team in the league, but I don\'t think they have the playoff experience to win four games against New York. Derek Jeter will carry New York to the World Series in six games.

World Series: Yankees vs. Giants

An East Coast vs. West Coast battle. The battle between the Giants\' arms and the Yankees\' bats would be an intriguing matchup. The Yankees have the clear advantage with the bats and bullpen, but San Francisco has the edge in the rotation. Can you picture a Matt Cain vs. CC Sabathia matchup? Although the Yankees have the offensive fire power to beat anyone, the Giants have the stuff to shut them down.

The Giants have a good mix of excellent pitching and just enough offense to win, and it will help them win the World Series in seven games.
', 'content_type': 'article', 'rss_date': 1349472535}

In the figures above, half of its scores were dropped, usually for ranking teams too low. These rankings are very favorable for the Big-12 conference, ranking it ahead of the SEC, followed by the Big Ten and Pac-12. It named the Oregon St. Beavers at No. 1 with the Alabama Crimson Tide at No. 8

Richard Billingsley’s rankings are often more comparable to the human polls, but it can be a Maverick as well. It loves Pac-12 teams, ranking five of its schools in the top 15. It likes Alabama at No. 1, LSU at No. 2, and South Carolina at No. 4. Other interesting rankings include Florida St. at No. 13, Florida at No. 16, Baylor at No. 18 and Notre Dame at No. 5.

Wes Colley’s Matrix promotes itself as “bias free.” It has some similarities with Anderson & Hester with its conference rankings. The top three teams are Oregon St., Florida and Notre Dame. Oregon and LSU are at No. 13 and 14.

Kenneth Massey’s ratings also differ from the human polls, but it is rarely one of the computers that has to drop its score. It leads off its rankings with Albama, Texas, Florida and Oregon, but Florida St. is only No. 11 and West Virginia No. 14.

Jeff Sagarin’s ratings, perhaps the most renowned over several years, can be similar to Massey’s ratings. One of its unique features is pure points, which claims to predict more accurately with teams’ scoring margins. Its top five features Alabama, Texas, Florida, South Carolina and Oregon. And I don\'t think any reasonably-minded person would either. I think he wants his guys reacting and not thinking so much. As Gray told ESPN\'s Ed Werder earlier today:

This is football, but my choice of words under the circumstances was probably bad. If I could take that part of it back, I would. I don\'t want guys thinking about injuring people, and when you say \'Gator truck\' that\'s probably what comes up. I just want our guys to be tougher.

Again, I think any reasonably-minded person knows that this is probably the case. Unfortunately, the NFL ceased being reasonably-minded about the perception of the league as it pertains to violence and injuries sometime after thousands of former players signed on to sue the league for its neglect in regards to the long-term effects of head injuries.

The specter of that ongoing litigation haunts every move the league makes these days, even ones as cosmetic as fining a coach for mentioning Gator trucks would be.

Now, fixing what ails the Titans defense isn\'t as simple as Gray saying a bunch of words and thinking the teams mentality, and on-field production, is going to change overnight. The case can be made, quite easily, that Gray is as big a part of the problem as his players\' mentality right now. His defense has been mind-numbingly simple up to this point, though that could perhaps be a conscious response to the talented offenses the Titans have played.

But no matter the job he\'s done in the X\'s and O\'s department, he is absolutely correct to say his guys need to be more aggressive. However, despite the dearth of talented passers the Patriots have faced, the secondary has been less than impressive and are currently ranked 25th in the NFL against the pass.

Even worse news for this group is that Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos are in town this weekend and if history is any indicator, the cornerbacks and safeties are in for a long day. Manning has become one of the league\'s elite quarterbacks more for his reading ability than his throwing ability, something that has not changed following his one-year absence from the game.

Manning will most assuredly head into Sunday\'s game against the Patriots with a deeper knowledge of the the secondary\'s assignments than most of the secondary itself. For a unit that is at its best when taking advantage of mistakes, this will be a sobering realization.

As I\'m sure you\'re aware, Manning cannot eviscerate a defense by himself—he needs receivers. In 2012 he has some talented ones in Eric Decker (24 catches, 332 yards and one touchdown), Demaryius Thomas (21, 325 and two), Jacob Tamme (15, 125 and one), and Brandon Stokley (13, 158 and one).

Thomas is the player that, quite frankly, scares me the most. The Georgia Tech product is big (6\'3", 229 pounds) and fast and can turn a quick-hit pass into a big play better than anyone else on this roster (just ask the Steelers).

In all likelihood, the Patriots will attempt to match Devin McCourty up with Thomas and that potentially could have some mixed results. While McCourty had a big game last week with two interceptions, most of the plays he was able to make were a result of bad throws by Fitzpatrick.

If the McCourty of last week shows up and makes good instinct plays however, he could take Thomas right out of the game. That leaves Decker and Tamme as Manning\'s main options and a much more manageable situation for the Patriots defense.

The second-biggest concern will be Tamme and fellow tight end Joel Dreesen and their matchup with the Patriots safeties. Steve Gregory and Patrick Chung have struggled to contain tight ends this season, evidenced by Scott Chandler\'s two touchdowns last week and Todd Heap\'s solid performance in Week 2.

Always aware of matchups, Manning will look to exploit that advantage with his big guys. If he can avoid mistakes it is unlikely that this unit will make him pay for being aggressive.

While much of the attention will be on Manning vs. Tom Brady, do not underestimate the importance of the Manning vs. McCourty/Chung/Gregory/Sterling Moore/Kyle Arrington matchup, as that one could be just as interesting and possibly more detrimental to the Patriots.
', 'content_type': 'article', 'rss_date': 1349472883}

To make his feat more impressive, Hartline did it against a tough Arizona Cardinals defense.

In Week 5, the Dolphins will be playing the Cincinnati Bengals, who have been known for solid defense the past few seasons, but haven\'t lived up to those expectations this season.

Cincy\'s defense is ranked 17th against the pass this season, which is worse than Arizona\'s defense, which came into Week 4 ranked No. 9 in the league. So logic would dictate Hartline could very well have another great game—maybe not the record-breaking kind from last week—against a lesser defense.

Just in case you were worried about how Miami\'s rookie quarterback would fare, the Bengals\' past games this season prove they haven\'t been all that impressive against first-year signal-callers.

Brandon Weeden of the Cleveland Browns lit the Bengals up for 322 yards and two scores in Week 2. In short, injuries are simply crushing the Cardinals right now but sitting 4-1 is impressive thus far.

Big Receivers Create Different Offensive Approach

Regardless of which quarterback is ever under center, the Cardinals possess a distinct advantage with their receivers\' size.

Fitzgerald and Floyd are 6\'3", Early Doucet is 6\'0" and tight end Rob Housler is 6\'5". Across the spectrum that is one impressive set of targets for any quarterback to target. And the best approach is to just toss up the ball and let these guys go get it.

This is why Floyd suits well in Arizona.

No matter how vulnerable a team\'s pass protection may be, a defense will rarely get pressure in one or 1.5 seconds. Whether it\'s a fade, quick slant, tight end pop-pass or curl to the outside these players present the size to beat anyone in single coverage.

Considering how defensively dominant the NFC West has become, attacking an opponent in this manner will take pressure off the protection and give more balance as well. It\'s the next draft where the Cardinals can then address up front.

2013 NFL Draft Provides Options

Four offensive linemen were taken in the first-round of the 2012 draft.

However, after Matt Kalil at No. 4 overall to the Minnesota Vikings the next linemen selected was Riley Reiff at No. 23. The previous draft was just not as deep with talent as what\'s capable for 2013.

Two potential prospects from Texas A&M (Luke Joeckel and Jake Matthews) and three from Alabama (D.J. Fluker, Barrett Jones and Chance Warmack) possess first-round talent. Others currently worthy of a Round 1 get are Michigan\'s Taylor Lewan, North Carolina\'s Johnathan Cooper and Wisconsin\'s Ricky Wagner.

With eight offensive linemen getting selected in Round 2 of the 2012 draft, Arizona didn\'t miss with Floyd at No. 13. The receiver position doesn\'t normally present as much depth as offensive line, so getting the playmakers when available must happen.

All that said, if the protection woes continue for the remainder of this fall and Arizona has to get a top lineman next spring.

Follow John Rozum on Twitter.

', 'content_type': 'article', 'rss_date': 1349472007}

It is a format that fans have never quite experienced in baseball. Sure, we have seen plenty of elimination games and must win games, but never this. Not a game in which both teams immediately have their backs thrown up against the wall and will fight tooth and nail to survive past tonight and into the weekend. There is no series, no margin for error, no game two if you lose, no tomorrow.

For the Cardinals, Braves, Orioles, and Rangers, it could all end today. Win and advance to the LDS or lose and see the hard work of a 162 game season come to a bitter end.

Here is a preview of each Wild Card game that will be seen today.

Cardinals vs Braves

The 2011 Cardinals were the team that would not go away. They did not know when to tap out, they did not know what the word quit meant, all they knew was how to fight and fight and fight some more until they came out on top.

Now, this year\'s version of the Cardinals are in the same spot as last year\'s. They have been told that they can not win without Albert Pujols and Tony La Russa. They have been told that they can not pull off a miracle season twice in a row. And frankly, they don\'t care what you think.

With Kyle Lohse taking the mound today in Atlanta, the Cardinals have reason to believe that they have just as good a chance as anybody to win the 2012 World Series. And why shouldn\'t they?

After all, Lohse is 16-3 on the season and posted a 2.86 ERA. The offense, led by Matt Holliday, Yadier Molina, Carlos Beltran, and last year\'s postseason hero David Freese is one of the best in baseball. And with the supporting cast of Jon Jay, Allen Craig, Pete Kozma, and Daniel Descalso rounding out the starting lineup, the Cardinals can certainly kill you very quickly with their bats.

For Atlanta, revenge is on their mind. After all, the Braves had a postseason spot all but locked up last September before these same St. Louis Cardinals rallied back from the grave to stun the Braves on the final day of the regular season and take away the Wild Card spot.

Atlanta will send Kris Medlen to the mound and he has been sensational all season. Medlen made his first start on July 31st and since then has posted a 9-0 record and 0.97 ERA. In fact, the Braves have won 23 straight games in which Medlen has started dating back to 2010.

Atlanta also sends a pretty stellar lineup onto to the field today. Future Hall of Famer Chipper Jones, in what could be his final baseball game of his career, Michael Bourn, Jason Heyward, and Dan Uggla will lead the way for the Braves offensively.

It is sure to be a great game, but it will all come down to pitching.

Medlen vs Lohse.

Which pitcher can dominate the other lineup more?

The answer is Lohse. The Cardinals have more power in their lineup than Atlanta does and Medlen will have a much tougher time holding the Birds in check.

The defending World Series champions will win today 3-1 and head home to continue their title defense against the Washington Nationals.

Orioles vs Rangers

While the first game of the inaugural Wild Card round in MLB will be dominated by pitching, the second game is going to be dominated by the lumber.

The Texas Rangers are not going to be stopped offensively. They lead the league with 808 runs scored this season and the Baltimore Orioles are either going to have to put up runs or go home.

Sure, the Orioles pitching staff can slow the Rangers down to some extent, but there is no way to completely stop them offensively. Just look at the World Series last year. It took the Cardinals ten runs in Game 6 to finally put away the Rangers.

With Josh Hamilton, Nelson Cruz, Adrian Beltre, Mike Napoli, and Ian Kinsler in the lineup, the Rangers are going to score early and often.

So, can the Baltimore bats keep up with those of the Rangers?

Texas sends Yu Darvish to the mound to face off against the Orioles\' Joe Saunders. Darvish is 16-9 this season with a 3.90 ERA for the Rangers. While those statistics may not be as impressive as the one\'s that Medlen and Lohse have on the National League side, it is important to note that Darvish was also pitching in the American League West. Facing opposition from the Athletics and Angels very frequently throughout the season.

To answer the previous question then, is yes. Yes, the Orioles can keep up with the Rangers. For a little while at least.

The Orioles will eventually lose though because of their batting average. This season Baltimore ranked 20th in baseball with a team average of .247 and they ranked 23rd in on-base percentage at .311. The Orioles have been all about power all season. Players like Matt Wieters hitting .249 and Mark Reynolds hitting .221 will just not cut it in the postseason.

Baltimore will fight hard, but come up short to a far superior team in the Texas Rangers.

The two time defending American League champions will win 11-7 and look to make it three American League titles in a row.

Maybe the third time will be the charm in Arlington this season.
', 'content_type': 'article', 'rss_date': 1349470766}
