Moving to Dublin

Employment Permit

There are two types of employment permit. Most likely you'll need critical skills permit.

  • General :- Need Labor Test if not programmer and salary < 60K, partner can join only after one year.
  • Critical Skills :- programmer or salary > 60K, No labor test required and partner can join immediately.

Visa

  • First visa issued is always single entry, you can enter once and then you'll have to Register at local GNIB office and apply for reentry visa within 3 months.

GNIB Registration

  • GNIB registration is one of the first things you'll have to do once you come in.
  • You have to take an appointment at Burgh Quay Registration Office website. But there is a huge backlog for appointment, start early to get an appointent(the website says start atleast 10 weeks before to secure a favourable appointment)
  • They release appointments everyday a t 2pm but the website gets crowded. Following app helps is getting one - GNIB. Here you can add your details and turn on notifications for when the appointment is available.
  • The fee is 300 Euros and have to be paid by card only.

Reentry Visa

  • As soon as you get your registration card, you need to apply for reentry visa.
  • Application form can be downloaded here.
  • Best way is to apply by post by submitting your passport, employment permit, registration card, photos and fees.
  • Fees is 100 Euro and can only be paid by Bank draft or Postal order payable to the Department of Justice and Equality.
  • Put everything in an envelope and send by registered post to following address -
    Re-entry Visa Processing Office
    Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service
    Department of Justice and Equality
    13-14 Burgh Quay
    Dublin 2
    D02 XK70

PPS Number

  • You must register for a meeting with the Department of Social Protection in order to get alocated a PPS Number ( Social Security number). Please refer to the following link
  • The wait time is roughly 2-3 weeks so register for the meeting over the coming days so your meeting is schedule for your first week in Dublin.
  • You'll need to bring along proof of address and employment along with original employment permit to the meeting.
  • Once the department process your application (this can take up to 1 week) only then can you apply for a tax certificate.

Tax Certificate

  • You'll need to register on revenue website and add your job
  • You'll need help of HR as it requires company's tax information.
  • You need to do this in order to get your payroll setup.

Bank Account

  • It can get tricky as you'll need a address proof and PPS number to open an account.
  • It was easy for my case, as Zalando had tie up with Bank of Ireland Grand canal branch, so with a support letter from company showing employment and temp address, I could open an account. Check with your company if you have similar arrangement.

Tips

  1. Apply for you and your partner visa together. It gets processed together then. If applied separately, your partner may have to wait for 6 months as the processing time for partner visa alone is 6 months.
  2. Once you have a date in mind for the move, secure GNIB and PPS appointment. Make sure they are as close to your arrival date.
