Why are you applying to the Student Support Specialist role?

As a recent grad of Turing, I understand a lot of the difficulties new students will face. I myself repeated mod 1, not because I couldn't pass my first time through, but more so because the new environment was one I was not ready for. I learned that having some help along the way can sometimes be the difference between passing or even enjoying this course, and possibly struggling a little too much otherwise. Later throughout my time at Turing I became the head of the Repeaters group; a position that I steered towards helping and understanding students that might be struggling, along with being available to listen to thoughts and concerns. Through this position, the student body of Turing became very important to me, and being there for them is something that speaks to who I am. I would like to help new students, and especially students who might be struggling, feel more comfortable and confident with their time at Turing.

What is your availability? Can you commit to staffing for weeks 1 - 4 in the upcoming inning?

I have applied to Turing+, but I believe that I should easily be able to have time to commit to all of this position as well.

How will you provide support while still cultivating student independence/confidence?

One of the hardest shifts for new students is going from a memorization based knowledge to a logic based one. It's the difference between knowing the answer and being able to figure it out. As a support role, I would want to be one that leads students to a thought process, rather than leading to an answer.

During a pairing session, a student tells you that they have been working on the same problem for over two hours and that they just want "the answer." What is your response?

For a long response, I might recant my experience of my first time through mod 1, where I found the answers, but I didn't quite understand the questions. This ultimately hindered my experience for that initial mod. That being said, often times after several hours of being stuck, the last thing we want is a lecture. These are great times to take breaks and switch gears, and perhaps pull up a different application that has similar problems that might be able to help a student get "unstuck".
