Mod 1 Week 4 Career Journal
Mod 1 Week 4: Creating a Vision, Part I
Habits Reflection:
How have you seen yourself become more aware of your habits? Have you tried implementing anything new? What have the results been?
From last weeks prompt, I wanted to get up and run first thing in the morning (mon/wed/fri). Since then I have made ⅔ of my days. It is hard starting a new habit, but I am proud of the work I have done so far.
Start Where You Are (Empathize with the user -- you)
Health: how you answer “how are you”; intersection of physical, mental, and emotional health
How would you rate your overall health on a scale of 1-5? How do you currently make time for activities associated with your health? What is a small change you could make here to readjust your health ratings?
I would rank my health pretty high, 4 if not 5. I work out (body weight) around 5 days a week, and I recently switched to vegetarianism a couple weeks before Turing started. I would say if I get my habit (listed above) down, I would consider myself at a 5.
Work: what you do
Make a short list of all the ways you work right now; How much value do each of those things bring to your life? How are those activities purposeful for you?
I would like to be able to put more effort into my school work. I would say right now I am between a 3 and 4 for that category. I think if I spent an extra hour each day trying to understand something better (as opposed to trying to learn something new) that would put my work in a higher bracket.
Play: what brings you joy? Think about joy just for the pure sake of doing it; everyone benefits from this kind of play
What activities do you do that bring you joy throughout an average week? In what ways could you make a small change to bring more joy into your life?
Honestly, between my amount of workload right now, and the state of everything during this pandemic, my play has definitely suffered. I would rate it at 1. Most of the things that I enjoy the most-e.g. playing sports, hanging out with friends etc, can’t be done at this time. I do get in a couple hours of video games or reading every week, so my play is not completely empty.
Love: sense of connection; who are the people who matter in your life and how is love flowing to and from you and them?
In this current time of uncertainty, I have found myself to be completely isolated. My roommates left, and I am in a new city without any close friends. I do have friends and family 1-2 hours away, and I try to make an effort to see them as much as I can.
How does love currently show up in your life? How do you show love to others right now? What adjustments would you like to make in this area?
The people that I am closest to are my sister and her husband/kids. Before school started, I would travel down to see them every other weekend (2 hours drive). Since school has started, I haven’t been able to see them as much, but I do still talk to them several times per week. I really wish I could see them more and I think after my lease is up, I will try to move closer to them.
Looking back at the 4 areas, do any problems emerge that you want to begin designing solutions for?
I don’t really know. I would like to be surrounded by more people, but that is hard at this time. Maybe I could just focus on calling, and hanging out with people remotely.
Define your needs, problem, and insights:
Based on what you wrote about above and your group conversation, what problems have you identified that you'd like to design solutions for? What do you already know about what you want for your career? What do you still need to find out? Who or what do you want to grow into by the end of the Turing program?
I know that when things clear up I would like to be in a more social environment. However, specifically for a career though, I would like to be more remote. I think some of the biggest things I need to do is start looking at companies, and asking employees what it’s like working there. Being remote isn’t a make or break factor, but working for a company that I care about coming into work is. I think this level of communication is the forefront of what I want to work towards most.
Ideate -- challenge assumptions
When you discussed software developers with your small group, what assumptions came up about what software developers actually do? What steps could you take to challenge those assumptions and find more facts to answer the question of what developers do? In addition to what a typical software developer life could look like, what do you want yours to include?
What we seem to agree on is that a good software developer is a good communicator. The more you communicate, the more you learn, which in turn makes you better at you job. The main way to text this theory would be to talk to people in the field. See what it’s really like in their job. Ask them what their struggles were and how they overcome them, and of course, how important is communication in their job.
Prototype -- start creating solutions
What is the basic threshold that your new career must meet after Turing? What would you hope WILL NOT happen in your future after Turing? What is your absolute, no-holds-barred, ideal dream for your future after Turing?
One of the basics for a job I would really prefer is to be able to work remote, however this is preceded by working for a good company-i.e. One that treats its employers and the world around them in a righteous way. If I could have all the bells and whistles, I would want a job that has an open and accepting workforce that is easy to get along with most everyone. I do know in most fields this is something of a rare find.
Test –- solutions
Based on this week of reflections, write out your initial vision statement for your career:
I want a career that is remote, but is capable of having employees being able to work on site, if desired. I would want the work atmosphere to be inviting and accepting, and easy to get along with (perhaps people I would someday become more than work friends with). These are probably my top concerns outside of salary and location.
