Unbundled, commodified emotions: interview questions

Unbundled Intimacy: the commodification, democratization, and repackaging of desires in Japan.

This is an interview protocol for a semi-structured interview. Questions that go beyond those indicated below may be asked. The interview is expected to take 30-60 minutes.

  1. Background Information:
  • Age
  • Time spent in Japan
  • Education
  • Gender identity and sexual orientation
  1. What brings you to the US?

  2. Do you play any video games? What about? What do you enjoy about them?

  3. What are some of your hobbies? How about your friends?

  4. Do you use any online communities?

  5. What do your parents do? What is their relationship like? How do you feel about marriage in Japan and elsewhere?

  6. Are you familiar with otaku/ota? What do you think of the term? Do you know anybody that identifies themselves as one?

  7. What do you think about the dating culture here? How does it compare to Japan’s?

  8. What are your thoughts on sōshoku danshi (herbivore men)?

  9. What about moe? How about shôjo culture?

  10. Have you heard of hosuto? What do you think about that group?

  11. How do you think that Japan is portrayed in Euro-American media?

  12. What about your non-Japanese friends? How do your relationships with them compare to your Japanese friends?

  13. What was sex education like in school?

  14. Are you looking for a relationship? What kind?

  15. Have you had any intimate relationships? Can you share what you enjoyed and didn’t about those relationships?
