<i3luefire> so... i am trying to install from the install58.fs and when it gets to installing the sets... on installation of base58.tgz it fails... it says https://gist.github.com/i3luefire/6807e553a69059b6400e and i did verify the download of the img against the sha256 hash. what am i missing?
<blakkheim> i3luefire: you need to verify the iso/fs beforehand, it can't verify itself
<i3luefire> i did
<blakkheim> so you're fine then
<blakkheim> oh there's another error, whoops
<blakkheim> i saw that one on the list somewhere.. let me see if i can find it
<Jungle-Boogie> just curious, i3luefire, what arch are you using?
<i3luefire> amd64
<Jungle-Boogie> cool
<i3luefire> seems like i must have done something wrong but i can't figure out what.
<i3luefire> unless it is because i tried to edit the partition layout from the auto
<Jungle-Boogie> well blakkheim may have something. i haven't seen that message myself, though.
<Jungle-Boogie> i don't think its the partition layout otherwise you likely would not be able to proceed
<blakkheim> haven't found it yet
<blakkheim> i3luefire you're using the 5.8 release image right? not a snapshot
<i3luefire> yes
<i3luefire> http://mirror.esc7.net/pub/OpenBSD/5.8/amd64/install58.fs
<itaylor57> i3luefire: are you in the dfw area?
<i3luefire> that is why i think i must have done something wrong. bc i think someone else would have notice this before.
<i3luefire> itaylor57, tulsa ok
<itaylor57> close enough hehe
<Jungle-Boogie> you could try the installer again without chaning the partition layout
<blakkheim> is it possible that you made a partition that was too small and it ran out of space?
<Jungle-Boogie> good point, blakkheim
<i3luefire> blakkheim, all i changed was making k smaller and using the freespace to increase /usr and /usr/local
<i3luefire> k being /home
<i3luefire> same problem with defaults
<i3luefire> so that must not be it.
<i3luefire> maybe my usb stick has some bad sectors or something
<blakkheim> can you paste the output of the installer starting with the "where are the sets located" question
<i3luefire> how would i paste it from the machine it is running on?
<i3luefire> i can type it
<blakkheim> i guess if you don't have a serial console that's not so easy
<Jungle-Boogie> picture?
<i3luefire> "Location of sets? (disk http or 'done') [http]"
<blakkheim> did you choose disk?
<i3luefire> yes
<i3luefire> it was able to find the first 2 sets
<blakkheim> it'd be a little wasted bandwidth, but what happens if you choose http there
<i3luefire> just not base
<i3luefire> i had to start over bc i ^c the install. just a sec
<i3luefire> fetching of bsd failed
<blakkheim> can you drop to a shell and see if network is working properly
<i3luefire> https://imgur.com/a/1HJgP
<i3luefire> sure
<blakkheim> it's not a network problem, nvm
<i3luefire> "illegal instruction"
<i3luefire> from ping google.com
<blakkheim> yeah
<i3luefire> tho it looks like the first ping went through
<i3luefire> 24.643mx
<i3luefire> ^ms
<blakkheim> do you have any other usb drives you could try dding it to?
<i3luefire> yes. i am on it now
<i3luefire> it is a very old drive. it is 2gb lol
<i3luefire> the potentiall bad one
<i3luefire> the one i am trying now is newer
<i3luefire> wtf... must be lots of cosmic rays here. second one wouldnt even boot. third one is booting now
<Jungle-Boogie> how are you getting them install58 on the usb drive?
<i3luefire> win32 disk imager
<Jungle-Boogie> oh, that does iso images too?
<i3luefire> i am using the .fs img but yes
<Jungle-Boogie> it must anyway otherwise you wouldn't get that far
<i3luefire> same problem on a new usb drive.
<i3luefire> blakkheim, should i run some kind of check on the target disk?
<blakkheim> i wouldn't bother
<i3luefire> *ssd
<i3luefire> ok
<Jungle-Boogie> since you have a network connect, what happens with the cd58.iso?
<i3luefire> so it installs without problem the sets bsd, bsd.rd, and bsd.mp but fails on base58.tgz
<i3luefire> ill try miniroot58.fs
<i3luefire> hmm
<i3luefire> same
<i3luefire> "illegal instruction"
<i3luefire> i will bypass the router
<kru3XY> hardware failures
<i3luefire> okay. same when directly on internet.
<i3luefire> so i guess i may have a bigger problem
<i3luefire> lemme try 5.7 because i had it running on this machine before
<Jungle-Boogie> setup a VM on your windows computer and try it out
<i3luefire> 5.7 works
<i3luefire> wtf... so it is just 5.8 that does not work on this machine...
<i3luefire> blakkheim, did you hear that? 5.7 installed fine
<blakkheim> gets weirder and weirder
<i3luefire> lol ikr
<i3luefire> at least i am not crazy. bc i was starting to wonder
<i3luefire> so should i submit a bug report? or what?
<Jungle-Boogie> download 58 from another mirror and compare sha hashes
<Jungle-Boogie> that's what I would do
<i3luefire> i compared the sha hash to the ones in the file on the server
<i3luefire> but okay
<i3luefire> i will
<i3luefire> better yet i will compare the checksum files from both servers.
<i3luefire> the texas mirror could be evil
<i3luefire> the sha256 files match char for char
<i3luefire> so no point downloading from the other mirror.
<kru3XY> smartmontools, memtest(er/86+) from ports maybe
<i3luefire> ?
<kru3XY> test your hardware
<i3luefire> well 5.7 installs fine. so... do you still think that is needed?
<i3luefire> can that be don from the live install fs
<i3luefire> err the install usb stick
<i3luefire> i guess i cant do a bug report without testing whether or not the current snapshot works.
<i3luefire> i guess i might as well try an upgrade from 5.7 to 5.8 now before i get very far into setting things up
<i3luefire> upgrade fails with the same problem
<i3luefire> i guess i should have known that
<i3luefire> this does not seem exactly the problem i am having but is it related? 006: RELEASE CD ISSUE: Oct 18, 2015 All architectures
<i3luefire> The "src.tar.gz" file on the source tree was created on the wrong day, and does not match the 5.8 release builds.
<i3luefire> A replacement file is available in the 5.8 release directory with the name cd-src.tar.gz; due to size of the file, check local mirrors also.
<i3luefire> oh well.
