Free people of independent Ukraine!
And that says it all.
Just four words, but how much is behind them today.
On the 182nd day of full-scale war.
How many symbols and meanings, exploits and losses, joy and pain are in these words.
And the main thing is how much truth is in them.
Our truth.
Truths about our present, with which it is impossible to argue, because it is impossible not to see and not to admit.
We are a free people of independent Ukraine.
After six months, when they are trying to destroy us, we are a free people of independent Ukraine.
And this is the truth about our future.
Free people of independent Ukraine.
Six months ago, Russia declared war on us.
On February 24, all of Ukraine heard explosions and gunshots.
And on August 24, I didn't have to hear the words "Happy Independence Day."
On February 24, we were told: you have no chance.
On August 24, we say: Happy Independence Day, Ukraine!
During these six months, we changed history, changed the world and changed ourselves.
Now we know for sure who is really our brother and friend, and who is not even a casual acquaintance.
Who did not lose his name and reputation, and who worried that the terrorists would save face.
Who doesn't really need us, but where the door is really open for us.
We understood who is who.
And the whole world learned who Ukrainians are.
And what is Ukraine.
No one will say about it anymore: it is somewhere over there, near Russia.
We started to respect ourselves.
We understood that despite all the help and support, no one but us will gnaw away at our independence.
And we united.
We didn't have Hymars yet, but we had people ready to stop tanks with their bare hands.
We were not ready to close the sky, but we had people who were ready to close their native land.
The Ukrainian people and their courage inspired the whole world.
They gave humanity a new hope that justice has not completely left our cynical world.
And it is still not force that wins, but truth.
Not money, but values.
Not oil, but people.
Even yesterday the world was not united.
COVID-19 clearly showed: it's every man for himself.
Ukraine has changed this in six months.
In all world history textbooks there will be a section "Times when Ukraine united the world."
When democracy grew teeth again.
When tyranny receives an answer in the language it understands.
Someone said: Europe is no longer a player.
Weak, disconnected, passive, sleepy.
Ukraine cheered up the whole continent.
Europe comes to the square.
Europe is introducing tough sanctions.
Europe unanimously recognizes that Ukraine is a future member of the European Union.
Big business realized that money still smells.
Blood, fire, death.
Corporations and brands are leaving the Russian market, and people have become more important than potential losses.
Never before in the world has public opinion had such an influence on politicians.
Today, people dictate trends and rules of behavior to the authorities.
It is a shame to be indifferent, inactive, slow.
Being indecisive and too cautious is a shame.
It is shameful to speak sluggishly, vaguely and too diplomatically.
Not supporting Ukraine is a shame.
And to say that Ukraine is tiring is a shame.
This is a very comfortable position: fatigue is a cover to close your eyes.
And today we hear from world leaders and ordinary citizens: we will be with you until the end, until your victory.
Dear people!
We always paid tribute to all the fighters for independence, called this day the main holiday, and the blue-yellow flag - a shrine.
They put their hands to their hearts while singing the national anthem, proudly saying "Glory to Ukraine!" and "Glory to heroes!".
On February 24, we had to prove our words with deeds.
On this day, the second all-Ukrainian referendum actually took place.
Again - the main question.
Again, a decisive choice.
But this time it was necessary to say "yes" to independence not in the ballot, but in the soul and conscience.
Go not to the precinct, but to the military commissariat, the Teroboron, the volunteer movement, the information troops, or simply work steadily and conscientiously at your place, at full strength, for a common goal.
We have all changed.
Someone is born again.
As a person, individual, citizen, patriot, simply as a Ukrainian.
And this, of course, is good news.
Someone disappeared.
He did not perish, he did not die, but he dissolved.
As a person, a personality, a citizen, as a Ukrainian.
And this is actually not bad news either.
We will not disturb each other anymore.
We made a choice. For some, it is Mariupol.
For some - Monaco.
But we know who more.
And we finally became truly one.
A new nation born on February 24th at 4 am.
She was not born, but reborn.
A nation that did not cry, did not scream, did not get scared.
Didn't run away.
I didn't give up.
And did not forget.
This flag will be everywhere it should be by right.
And in Donbass.
And in Crimea.
The enemy thought we would be greeted with flowers and champagne.
Instead, he received wreaths and Molotov cocktails.
I was waiting for an ovation, but I heard "claps".
The occupier believed that in a few days he would be paraded in the center of our capital.
Today, you can see this "parade" on Khreschatyk.
Proof that enemy equipment can appear in the center of Kyiv only in this form.
Burnt, destroyed and destroyed.
We don't care what kind of army you have, what matters to us is what kind of land we have.
We will fight for her until the end.
We hold on for six months.
It is difficult for us, but we clenched our fists and bite our fate.
Every new day is a new reason not to give up.
Because, having gone through so much, we have no right not to reach the end.
What is the end of the war for us?
We used to say: peace. Now we say: victory.
We will not seek an understanding with the terrorists.
Although we understand the Russian language that you came to defend.
And they killed thousands of people they came to liberate.
And Johnson, who speaks English, is much more understandable and close to us than murderers, rapists and marauders who did all this in Russian.
And we don't sit down at the negotiating table because of fear, with a gun to our temples.
For us, the most dangerous iron is not rockets, planes, tanks, but shackles.
Not trenches, but fetters.
And we will raise our hands up only once - when we celebrate our victory.
All over Ukraine.
Because we do not trade our lands and our people.
For us, Ukraine is all of Ukraine.
All 25 regions, without any concessions or compromises.
We do not know these words, they were destroyed by rockets on February 24.
Donbas is Ukraine.
And we will return it, whatever the path may be.
Crimea is Ukraine.
And we will return it.
Whatever this path will be.
Don't want your soldiers to die?
Free our lands.
Don't want your mothers to cry?
Free our lands.
These are our simple and clear terms.
Free people of independent Ukraine!
We meet this day in different places.
Someone is in trenches and dugouts, in tanks and BMP, at sea and in the air.
He is fighting for independence on the front lines.
Someone is on the road, in cars, trucks and trains.
He fights for independence, delivering what is necessary to those on the front lines.
And someone is on a smartphone or at a computer.
And he also fights for independence - collecting funds so that those on the road have something to bring to those on the front lines.
We meet this day in different circumstances, conditions and even in different time zones, but with a single goal - preservation of independence and victory of Ukraine!
We have united.
Happy Independence Day, Ukraine!
Glory to Ukraine!
Free people of an independent Ukraine!
That basically says it all.
Today, so much more stands behind so few words.
It's the 182nd day of the full-scale war.
Just think how much meaning and symbolism is in those words, how many heroic deeds and deaths, how much joy and pain.
Most importantly - how much truth is in those words.
Our Truth.
Truth about our present undeniable reality, because it's impossible to not see it and recognize it for what it is.
We, are free people of an independent Ukraine.
After six months of attempts to exterminate us, we are still, free people of an independent Ukraine.
And in the future, this will still be our truth.
Free people of an independent Ukraine.
Russia declared war half a year ago.
On February 24 all of Ukraine heard explosions & gunshots.
And by August 24 the words "Happy Independence Day" were not meant to be heard.
On February 24 we were told: you've no chance.
But on August 24 we say: Happy Independence Day, Ukraine!
In the last six months, we changed history, we changed the world, we changed ourselves.
We know full well who our true friends and brothers are, and who's barely an aquaintance.
Who kept true to their word and reputation, and who faltered and worried about terrorists saving face.
We know where we are not welcome, and where the door is always open for us.
We understood, who is who.
And the entire world found out who Ukrainians are.
And what Ukraine is.
No one will ever say: "it's somewhere over there, beside russia"
We gained respect for ourselves.
We realized, that despite all the help and support, nobody except us will fight tooth and nail for our independence.
So we united.
We didn't have "HIMARS", but we had people, people ready to stop tanks with their bare hands.
Nobody was willing to protect our skies, but we had people, people willing to protect their native land with their own bodies.
The courage of Ukrainian people has inspired the world.
It gave humanity new hope, that there's still some justice in this cynical world.
And that truth wins over power.
Principles win over profit.
People over pumping oil.
Yesterday the world was divided.
As COVID-19 has clearly demonstrated: it's everyone for themselves.
But in six months, Ukraine changed all that.
In every history book world wide, there will be a new chapter: "When Ukraine United the World".
When democratic power finally got some teeth.
When tyranny finally got the only type of response they're capable of understanding.
Someone once said that "the EU is no longer a major world player"
Weak, divided, avoidant, asleep.
Ukraine roused the entire continent.
Europe is coming out in force.
Europe is introducing tough sanctions.
Europe is speaking with one voice: Ukraine's future is in the EU.
Big business is discovering the true smell of money.
Of blood, fire, death.
Corporations and brands are exiting the russian market, and people have become more important than potential profits.
Never has public opinion mattered so much and had such an influence on politicians.
Today, the people dictate to politicians how to behave, what the rules & trends are.
Being indifferent, inactive, or slow is shamed.
Being indecisive & too cautions, is shamed.
Mealy-mouthed, vague and overly diplomatic speeches, are shamed.
Not supporting Ukraine, is shamed.
Saying that you're tired of hearing about Ukraine, also shamed.
It's a very convenient position to take: tiredness - an excuse to shut your eyes.
But today we are hearing from both world leaders and ordinary people: We are with you till the end. Until your victory.
My dear people,
We always paid our respects to those who fought for independence, we made this our most important celebration, and our blue and yellow flag, enshrined.
We put our hands on our hearts, sang our anthem, and proudly spoke: "Glory to Ukraine!" and "Glory to heroes!".
On February 24, we had to prove that our actions speak louder than words.
Ineffect, that day became a second country wide referendum.
Once again - the key question.
Once again - a key decision.
But this time, we had to say "Yes" to independence not in the ballot box, but within our selves, within our sense of morality, within our souls.
We all had to go, this time not to the voting precincts, but to conscription offices, territorial defense forces, to the volunteer stands, or to fight the information war, or simply, steadily and faithfully continue to work in place, with all our might, towards the common goal.
We've all changed.
Some were reborn anew.
As a new person, a new individual, a new citizen, a new patriot, or simply as a Ukrainian.
And this is, of course, great news.
Some disappeared.
They didn't die, or got killed, but faded away.
Faded away as a person, individual, citizen, as a Ukrainian.
But this wasn't such a bad outcome either.
We won't get in each other's way.
We all made a choice: for some - it was Mariupol
For others - it was Monaco.
But we know who's in the majority.
And we are finally truly united.
A new nation, that emerged into the world on February 24th, at 4am
Not born, but reborn.
A nation that didn't scream and cry, that wasn't afraid.
Didn't run away.
Didn't surrender.
And never forgot.
This flag will be everywhere, where its rightfully meant to be.
In Donbass.
And in Crimea.
Our enemies thought we'd be greeting them with bouquets of flowers and champagne.
Instead, they got funeral wreaths and molotovs.
They were waiting to hear claps from applause, but heard claps from gunfire.
The invaders believed, that in a couple of days they'd be parrading through the streets of our capital.
Today, on Khreshchatyk, you can see this "parade".
Proof, that the only way enemy equipment will reach the centre of Kyiv, is in this state.
Burnt up, ruined, destroyed.
It doesn't matter what kind of army you have, our land matters to us more.
We will fight for it till the end.
We've held on for six months.
It's hard, but with clenched fists, and gritted teeth we fight for our destiny.
Every new day, is a new reason to never give up.
Because after overcoming so much, we have no right, to not to see this through.
What would be an end to the war for us?
Before, we would have said: Peace. Now we say: Victory.
We won't try to come to any sort of "understanding" with terrorists.
But we understand russian, the language you supposedly came to defend.
And then killed thousands of people you supposedly came to save.
[Switching to Russian] Even the English Boris Johnson is closer and more intelligible to us than murderers, rapists, and looters that do things the "russian way".
When it comes to it, we won't be sitting down at the negotiating table out of fear, with a gun to our heads.
For us, the iron that terrifies us most comes not from rockets, planes and tanks, but from shackles and chains.
Not trenches, but tethers.
We will put our hands up for one reason only: to celebrate our victory.
With all of Ukraine.
Because we don't barter with our lands and our people.
For us, Ukraine, is all of Ukraine.
All 25 regions, with no concessions or compromises.
We no longer know the meanings of those words. They were destroyed by rockets on 24th of February.
Donbas is Ukraine.
And we will take it back, no matter how hard the road will be.
Crimea is Ukraine.
And we will take it back.
No matter how hard the road will be.
If you don't want your soldiers to die,
Free our lands.
If you don't want your mothers to cry,
Free our lands.
These are our very clear and simple terms.
Free people of an independent Ukraine!
We are celebrating today in many different places.
Some - in trenches and bunkers. In tanks and armoured vehicles, on the sea and in the air.
Fighting for independence on the front lines.
Some - are on the road, in cars, trucks and trains.
Fighting for independence, delivering what's needed to those on the front lines.
Some - on their phones, or their computers.
Also fighting for independence, gathering money, so that those on the road have something to deliver those on the front.
We are celebrating today in different circumstances, different situations, and even in different time zones, but with a single common goal: Protecting our independence and ensuring our victory.
We are united.
Happy Independence Day, Ukraine!
Glory to Ukraine!
