Debugging

Debugging JavaScript Applications

A practical distillation for Fullstack Academy students

Faults in computer problems were theorized as far back as 1843, when Ada Lovelace noted of Babbage's Analytical Engine, "Granted that the actual mechanism is unerring in its processes, the cards may give it wrong orders." Almost 160 years later, NIST reported that software errors cost the US $59 billion annually. Clearly, some of the cards are wrong. However, unlike Grace Hopper's famous moth, most of the time the culprit is ourselves.

Debugging is a sanitization procedure consisting of:

  • Preventing bugs in the first place, through good practices and assistive tooling.
  • Detecting bugs when they first arise, through proper error handling and testing.

Getting Started

These instructions will get you a copy of the project up and running on your local machine for development and testing purposes. See deployment for notes on how to deploy the project on a live system.

Prerequisites

WDI Guidelines for Survival

  1. PRESS ENTER.

    • To get the most from this course, you'll have to let go of your fear of being wrong. So press enter and run your program. The worst that can happen is you get an error, and in Ruby, errors tell you what to correct. So run your programs early and often. Press enter.
  2. When you feel bad about your progress or level of understanding, remember that to become good at anything, you first have to be terrible, and the only way to stop being terrible is to keep going. So keep going.

  3. Do the smallest Next Thing.

    • Don't read the whole exercise or homework (especially when it's given in parts) and try to plan out how to build the entire thing! Read the first bit of the assignment, and then proceed to get that part working. Only then should you move on. Even simple exercises will become overwhelming if you try to tackle the whole thing at once.
  4. Assume nothing.

  • You might think you know what your program is doing, but if your program

This is my default career advice for people starting out in geo/GIS, especially remote sensing, adapted from a response to a letter in 2013.

I'm currently about to start a Geography degree at the University of [Redacted] at [Redacted] with a focus in GIS, and I've been finding that I have an interest in working with imagery. Obviously I should take Remote Sensing and other similar classes, but I'm the type of person who likes to self learn as well. So my question is this: What recommendations would you give to a student who is interested in working with imagery? Are there any self study paths that you could recommend?

I learned on my own and on the job, and there are a lot of important topics in GIS that I don’t know anything about, so I can’t give comprehensive advice. I haven’t arrived anywhere; I’m just ten minutes ahead in the convoy we’re both in. Take these recommendations critically.

Find interesting people. You’ll learn a lot more from a great professor (or mentor, or friend, or conference) o
