Short bio:
After finishing an undergraduate degree at Oberlin College with a major in applied mathematics, I pursued a career in music. I played in a several groups in Seattle, performing, recording, and composing. During this time, I also worked in sales for a regional wine distributor and as a barista at several local cafés.
Many of my friends and acquaintances were working in the sciences or in software development, and my passion for mathematics was rekindled by some of our conversations. I started tutoring people who were preparing for the GREs, and took the GREs myself. I also tutored middle school students in mathematics at a local after-school program. I knew I had a scientific side, though I wasn't yet sure what area to devote myself to, and I thought my scientific interests might be in competition with my creative interests.
When the opportunity arose to work at Big Tree Woodworking, a company that designs and builds custom windows, doors, and architectural woodwork, I took it because I wanted to work with physical materials to better understand the environments we live in. Shaping raw materials into finished pieces, assembling, installing, and planning the necessary processes has been a rewarding experience.
I continued to study mathematics and explore its applications in science and engineering. When I started learning Python, I realized that programming is an ideal platform for both my creative and my analytical abilities. I started using MIT's open-courseware, gaining momentum, and developing a serious interest in stepping into the world of development.
