The deadly levels of air pollution in the world\u2019s major cities are so worrying that the WHO has declared it a global public health emergency.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Air pollution is the cause of more than 5.5 million deaths worldwide per year \u2013 more than the number of deaths caused by malaria and HIV combined.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-1199 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<img width=\"770\" height=\"451\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Whats-the-matter_.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p><strong>WHO Air Quality Guidelines<\/strong> limits pollution levels to 20 micrograms per cubic metre for the larger air pollution particles (PM10) and 10 micrograms per cubic metre for the smaller PM2.5 particles. Cities in the Middle East, southeast Asia and the western Pacific have pollution levels of five to 10 times the recommended levels.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-2' class='gallery galleryid-1199 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<img width=\"600\" height=\"338\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/PollutionTest_.gif\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>Beijing is commonly thought of as the most polluted city in the world, but it is India\u2019s capital, Delhi,\u00a0that has\u00a0the overall highest levels of air pollution. The main cause remains vehicle fumes, fuelled by a lack of investment in public transport. The city is also a thoroughfare for 70 000 trucks daily.<\/p>\n<p>Specialists say that just breathing the air in Delhi is the equivalent of smoking roughly 10 cigarettes per day. Children who walk or cycle to schools that are situated along main roads are exposed to high doses of toxic smoke. Pollution levels in schools are four times worse than those that would raise alarm in London.<\/p>\n<p>India has the world\u2019s highest rate of death from respiratory disease \u2013\u00a0about 10 times that of Italy, five times that of the UK and twice that of China.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Annual average concentration of the most dangerous particles (PM2.5)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id='gallery-3' class='gallery galleryid-1199 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<img width=\"770\" height=\"827\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/Map-pollution.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Source: World Health Organization database, 2016 update<\/h5>\n<p>According to WHO data, India has 16 of the world\u2019s 30 most polluted cities with the highest levels of the dangerous PM2.5 particles.<\/p>\n<p>China has five cities in the top 30 most polluted. China was making progress in 2014 by relying less on coal, but in December 2016 authorities issued a red alert in Beijing, forcing schools to close and urging people to stay indoors to avoid the harmful smog. This is due to a rebound in the steel industry and boom in the property market. When I start something, I don\u2019t stop until it\u2019s perfect,\u2019 says Owen.<\/p>\n<p>His love of music dates back to the \u201980s, the days of vinyl and cassettes \u2013 two formats that have made a comeback. Owen\u2019s creative curiosity saw him dabbling in every style of music. \u2018Michael Jackson, Prince, Lionel Richie, George Michael, Gladys Knight, Sade, Marvin Gaye and Keith Sweat are just a few who motivated me,\u2019 he shares. \u2018I\u2019ve taken a bit of all the different genres and musicians and fashioned them into my own personality. So, there\u2019s jazz, soulful house pop, dance and R&amp;B in the music I make.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Owen composed his first song, \u2018Lonely\u2019, at the age of 12, but only joined his first band in 2006. \u2018My musical journey has been an interesting one,\u2019 he says. Since 2008 he has produced more than 300 songs, and his perseverance eventually led him to team up with local producers and produce a dance EP that he self-released in 2010. \u2018A music video was made for one of the songs, \u201cMy Black Coffee\u201d, and featured on Channel O \u2013 all without funding or a record label!\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018In 2016 I teamed up with two Rustenburg-based producers \u2013 Frenzy Dreams and Foot Sounds \u2013 on a track called \u201cDeeper\u201d, Owen continues. \u2018The song was inspired by a poem I wrote for my wife and the track featured on<em> House Afrika Session 6 <\/em>and<em> DJ All Stars<\/em>, and enjoyed national radio support too.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Owen\u2019s advice: \u2018Seek to understand your purpose and potential, and when you find it don\u2019t let go until it materialises.\u2019<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id='gallery-5' class='gallery galleryid-1365 gallery-columns-1 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<img width=\"770\" height=\"414\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Article-Gallery.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"\" \/>\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p>As for Owen&#8217;s\u00a0most recent\u00a0track: \u2018I met these talented young men John and George Lebitsa about seven years ago and we\u2019ve\u00a0collaborated on a few songs since then. Our latest collaboration is called \u201cTogether\u201d, and there\u2019s both an Afro-jazz and Christmas jazzy-lounge version.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Owen plans to make a difference in the lives of others, with a portion of the proceeds going to a project close to his heart. \u2018I\u2019m passionate about helping others. There\u2019s so much negativity in the country at the moment and my latest track, \u201cTogether\u201d, is my response to that. Ideate<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Share and refine your idea.<\/strong> Ideas have a better chance of being implemented when you share them. Consider which strategic themes your idea meets and send us your video pitch. Owners of shortlisted ideas are invited to present to Jacques for feedback that will ultimately help them implement. Don\u2019t leave money lying around<\/strong> (over and above what you\u2019ve budgeted) in your bank account. Move any additional cash into your bond or savings account \u2013 that way you won\u2019t accidently spend it and you can move it back when January comes knocking.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Avoid lengthy trips to the mall.<\/strong> Between all the specials and holiday jingles, it\u2019s very easy to open your wallet. \u2018Do your festive season shopping alone and stick to your list,\u2019 suggests Eunice Sibiya, head of consumer education at FNB. \u2018This will give you less reason to be distracted from your task.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Limit convenience spending.<\/strong> The holidays throw us out of our normal routine. With a crowded house, activities to plan and social gatherings, ordering takeaways might seem like a good idea \u2013 but it\u2019s not good for your waist or your wallet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Rethink gifts.<\/strong> Presents should never be the reason you don\u2019t stick to your budget or go into debt. Spend time thinking about how to give meaningful gifts rather than the latest and greatest that cost a fortune. \u2018If your child is set on an expensive toy, electronic device or item of clothing, rather than giving in and purchasing it, sit down with them and make a plan that they can work towards in the New Year,\u2019 Eunice advises.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Self-gifting<\/strong> is easy to do over the holidays. Limit the \u2018presents\u2019 you buy for yourself while out shopping.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong> <strong>Ask\u00a0guests to contribute<\/strong> a dish\u00a0for social gatherings so you don\u2019t end up footing the bill alone.<\/p>\n<p>Eunice\u2019s final advice: \u2018Remember there is a festive season every single year. The largest increase in spend in December was on luxury goods and entertainment, but which category takes the prize?<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Luxury goods compared to entertainment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Consumers spent 49% more at toy, clothing, electronic and jewellery stores than any other month during 2016. Spend in this category jumped 8% from R265 million in the festive season of 2015 to R394 million last year.<\/p>\n<p>Close runner-up: spend on restaurants, liquor stores and tickets for theatre and events was 45% higher than at any other time of the year. Consumers spent R681 million on fun last December \u2013 13% up from the previous holiday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The other credit card spinners were\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Health and beauty<\/strong> saw an increase of 38% in the holidays compared to other periods of the year, but the sector is stagnant at 0.4% year-on-year. Taking inflation into account, spend actually slowed from 2015 to last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Home makers: <\/strong>Looking at what consumers spend in December compared to other months of the year, home spend increased by a lesser margin in 2016 (35%) compared to 2015 (44%).
