Proposal 1: "Coding for compassion: How to build a game that teaches children empathy" (A working title)

  • Extended 1.5 workshop

In 2020, COVID-19 made its way around the globe pushing many survivors to their physical and emotional edge. Presently, we continue to adjust to the 'new norm' of living in a society of limited human to human interactions. For over a year the children in the stages of developing core human social abilities - such as empathy were robbed of in-person opportunities to explore how to cope with the emotions of their peers.

Maude and Jannaee teamed up to build [name of game: TBD] - a game that allows children to practice growing their skills in empathy, compassion and kindness. This will be a presentation aimed at teaching the basics of game, development using a game engine and C++.

Audience Skill Level: No skills required, as this will touch on highlevel concepts.

What participants will gain from attending this talk:

  • Basic understanding of programming with C++
  • Brief overview of how to use Godot a 2D game engine
  • Light intro into game design theory
  • An exploration into how this game will impact a child's emotional intelligence
  • Access to all code and demo on github repository

Godot game engine: A beginners journey in to game development with Godot

In this talk, I will demonstrate how to build a game with Godot, a free and open source community-driven 2D and 3D game engine. I will share the process of taking a game from design sketch to an operational game. The game featured in this demo will be based on the one built for the proposed talk "Coding for compassion: How to build a game that teaches children empathy".

Audience Skill Level: Audience should have some experience with C++ and basic programming ie. functions, variables, methods, imports.

What participants will gain from attending this talk:

  • Particpants will have a chance to see how to use GDNative and C++
  • Will learn how to set a stage and import assets
  • Understand the basics of game design
  • Bonus, also see how to use the GoDot built in editor for those wanting to use the a gui instead of programming

Speakers Profiles

Jannaee is an easygoing conversationalist who enjoys spending time with family, creating art and learning about new technology. She spent her early professional years working as a Graphic Designer. However, her curiosity about the inner workings of web design led her down a path of becoming a Front End developer at IBM.

Originally from South Korea, raised in Jacksonville, Florida and currently one of the few residents of Raleigh, North Carolina who roots for the Jags.

  1. Do you have a preference in using 2D engine over a 3D engine? I was thinking we might need a cross device compatible framework, so that it can be easier for a infant/toddler to use on a touch screen versus a mouse on a computer?

Some examples of 2d engines:

  1. Would you be up for an extended workshop? We need to supply the talk formats that we'd be interested in and i can see this going into a 1.5 workshop.

List of my personal goals I want to achieve by doing this project:

  • learn interaction design for game development
  • learn and use C++
  • opportunity to do a cross between tech and design
  • develop something to help preschoolers to cope with emotions
