Country of Origin

At-home Scavenger Hunt, June 13, 2020

J. Sachs

Version 1.01

Overview

Goal: to find items that have a country of origin listed. Countries with lower population have higher base point values.

For Part 1 of the rules, see https://gist.github.com/jason-s/970d43f5002222d92916f2a1129cf54e

This document outlines Part 2 of the rules (specific to this scavenger hunt)

Start time: 12:00pm MST June 13 2020 = 3:00pm EDT June 13 2020 = 7:00pm UTC June 13 2020

End time: 12:00pm MST June 14 2020 = 3:00pm EDT June 14 2020 = 7:00pm UTC June 14 2020

All entries must be received on or before the end time --- please read Part 1 as it mentions how to submit entries

Details

Valid items

Valid items must be manufactured / packaged and clearly labeled with country of origin.

Acceptable terms for describing country of origin are (using Mexico as an example)

  • Country of Origin: Mexico
  • Product of Mexico
  • Made in Mexico
  • Manufactured in Mexico
  • Imported from Mexico
  • Assembled in Mexico
  • Printed in Mexico

Unacceptable terms:

  • Designed in Mexico (the idea originated in Mexico, but this doesn't clarify where the thing originated)

Equivalent terms will be accepted on request (and added to this list) but are subject to the organizer's approval.

Fine print

  • Durable/semirigid packaging (boxes or cases ok; plastic wrap not ok) or instruction manuals listing country of origin may be used as a proxy for the items themselves

  • The labeling must be clearly intended to indicate the country of origin to satisfy regulatory requirements. Examples of invalid labeling would include:

    • "French Fries" or "Belgian Waffles" (these are using country names as adjectives)
    • "Swiss-style steak" (similar)
    • "Fine Austrian Chocolate" or "Madagascar Vanilla Bean Paste" or "Canadian Apple Juice" (similar)
    • "This toy was carefully assembled with care in Milan, Italy" --- even if the product in question is telling you literally that it comes from another country, it must use regulatory labeling.
    • the book title "Made in Taiwan: Studies in Popular Music" (this is a book title, not a regulatory labeling)
    • text in a book, magazine, newspaper or advertising circular describing an item
  • The country of origin must be one of the following:

    • A UN member or observer state listed on the Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_and_dependencies_by_population (relevant countries have a numeric rank listed)
    • one of the following: Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau
    • a former sovereign state
      • USSR: 5 points
      • Czechoslovakia: 9 points
      • West or East Germany: 8 points
      • Yugoslavia: 8 points
      • Other countries with approval by organizer (basically any sovereign state extant since 1945 is ok): 10 points
  • Valid alternative names include

    • Generally accepted names that are equivalent to the entire country (e.g. "USA" / "United States" or "UK" / "United Kingdom")
    • The labeling may be in the language of the country of origin as long as it is in the Latin alphabet, for example:
      • Hecho en Mexico
      • Prodhuar në Shqipëri (Made in Albania)
    • Former names of equivalent countries, for example:
      • Zaire (= Democratic Republic of Congo)
      • Burma (= Myanmar)
      • Rhodesia (= Zimbabwe)
      • British Honduras (= Belize)
      • Ceylon (= Sri Lanka)
  • Regions or provinces or subcountries are not valid. Examples:

    • Made in California
    • Produit du Québec
    • Made in England (part of the UK)
    • Made in Scotland
    • Made in Wales
    • Made in Great Britain (also part of the UK)
  • Multiple countries: In certain cases, a product may be labeled clearly as having more than one country of origin

    • In this case, the entrant must designate one of the countries as a representative
    • Entry submission should list all countries separated by slashes, but with the designated country first
    • The base score will be the weighted average of the scores of all indicated countries, rounded to the nearest integer, with the chosen representative country having twice the weight
    • For purposes of determining multiplier, the representative country will be used
    • Example: "Product of USA or Chile", entrant designates "Chile" and submits an entry stating "Chile / USA"
      • Base score is 4 points (USA = 1 point, Chile = 5 points, (1 + 2*5)/3 = 3.666 points)
      • If a total of 2 people enter with items having Chile the country of origin, the multiplier for this item will be 5×

Scoring

Scoring for each country is based on a formula inversely proportional to the square root of the population.

Point value = rounded to the nearest integer and limited to between 1 and 10, where p is the population listed in the June 12 2020 revision of https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=List_of_countries_and_dependencies_by_population&oldid=962116750

FAQ

Strategy tips

If you are trying to decide between two items, consider the multiplier dependent on how many other entrants choose the same country. For example Angola (4 points) vs. Taiwan (5 points) -- Angola has fewer points but since when have you seen a "Made in Angola" sticker? This is probably an instant x10 multiplier if you can find it.

Clarifications

  • What if my item has two different countries of origin described in two different ways, such as "Printed in China, assembled in Uruguay" ? This is a different situation than "Product of China or Uruguay". If both are valid, you may choose one of the descriptions, and it counts on its own for base point value and multiplier. ("Assembled in Uruguay" is probably the better choice.)
