AMPEX ADO BULLETIN #1 | |
Ampex has a component input/output kit for the ADO without signalencoding/decoding. The
ADO component kit installs into existing ADO systemsenabling RGB or YUV (Y, R-Y, B-Y)
video inputs and to output the same signal. The kit consists of three boards; two for
signal input and a new Output Video PWA (printed wiring assembly) to replace the existing
composite output board. The kit enables composite and component input and output in any
combinationby setting the proper jumper. Sync on green is selectable in the RGB
outputmode.Ampex expects that many Beta format users will now keep their component
videoquality while doing digital effects.

To improve the ECL, 1X clock distribution on the motherboard.2. To improve the operation
of the Output Control PWA.III. DISCUSSIONMinor wiring changes are made on the motherboard
which greatlyimproves the operation of the IVP PWA and the Output Control PWA. Thesewiring
changes will also improve a possible crosstalk problem when theIVP is placed on an
extender.Additionally, prior to this modivication, placing the Output Control onthe
extender can cause the Video Output to exhibit a flashing problem.Sometimes this problem
shows up even if the board is not on theextender. This fault is more pronounced if the

if the border is used withcertain Luma border values.III. DISCUSSIONA small modification
is made on the Coefficient Store PWA which improvesthe rounding error correction on the
FIR filter. This change greatlyimproves the video performance out of the ADO. The change
affects bothH - V PWA's.As state above this effect is not very visible unless a border is
used.It normaly shows up as horizontal and vertical lines going through thepicture and
background. The magnitude of the noise (lines) changes withthe border Luma levels and

Frank,The delay thru the ADO is one full frame, not a field. In addition, h shifts can
occur due to video not matching exactly size wize. the ADO can only pull up the video to
11.0 ms. But this is usualy off the homeset to the left so not to worry. Most tapes end
up being at 11.0 if original material was 10.8 so again no problem. My method of matching
size is1. H phase the machine and ADO to house bars on the Aux switcher.2. Then putting
grid into the ADO and doing a horiz wipe between ADO and Grid on the swithcer...move the
PICTURE PHASE or sometimes called VIDEO PHASE located on the output board in the top

Subj: EXTERNAL CONTROL OF ADO
From a conceptual viewpoint, external control of an ADO signal system is quite simple;
meerly "feed" all the parameters to the HLC every field time. This is what the CPP does
when you are in program mode. The cpp software only lets you,for sanity's sake, adjust a
few parameters at a time; but each field time, the entire transform is sent. Those looking
to control an ADO signal system from their computer must have some special hardware and
software goop. The hardware is the 153k baud link between the HLC and CPP. The software is
another beast. Different flavors of code may have different or slightly different data
structures. You will want to ask your salesman about gettin/ buying / licensingthe
required documents from Ampex RWC. (I have no idea what the current Ampex policy is on the
release of these documents - talk to your salesman about what you want to do, that's the
best place to start). Morale of this story is that external control of ADO is not painful,
but it is a very non-triv)ae task. Goodluck, lets hear about any k controllers that link
to teh HLC directly and what they do.

The uses can be endless, for example..put your Char Gen Key or title cam in it and now
when you fly titles you can key with a perfect ado key instead of a switcher luminance
key. Also if you need the ADO to have the shape of a star orcircle or any custom shape
that can be entered via a camera or switcher wipe. I'm sure there are many more ideas on

Mark, probably the most exciting use we have gotten out of the digimat is in conjunction
with Ultimatte projects. By feeding the knock out into the digimat and the fill into the
video in, you gain unlimited freedom in placing and flying the key without having to also
build a matching knock out. This alsocame in handy for our work with an abekas a62, where
we had to feed both a key and a fill in but we wanted the freedom to place them anywhere
on the screen. We just fed the key from the ado into the a62 and away we went. Jeff

Tom,The version 8 software has ad2-d another "mode" called Concentrator. Just as you had
the Run and Program mode, you now have the Concentrator mode. The concentrator is accessed
by touching the concentrator button (actualy the old Crop T/L button relabled). To set
which channel gets the conc output, fromthe concentrator menu you touch "MORE" until Conc
Flags soft key appears, in that sub menu you select CONC or SELF for concentrator key out
or self key out.In addition on the RUN line you must set the priority, eg 1 2. This
should getyou started. The version 8 software is great for concentrator
light/ambient/transparency control. In addition, on the RUN line, with both channels on
the screen, try changing the priortiy to 1,2,3,4 then just 1 then just 2 and see what

lower number versions. Version 5 users can't read disks made on version 8. But moving up

I have had.I like the Version 8 software because the concentrator is treated as a "mode"

Msg# 5068 (BLACK LEVEL)
If you have the "I V Parms" option on your ADO you can use the negative solarization
control (the one adjusted by turning the z-axis of joystick) to set the black level to
practically any level you want. There are a couple of caveats I would pass along to
anyone wishing to do this however: 1) Its easy to get carried away and set the pedestal
to an "illegal" level. You can get the video into the sync part of the signal and cause
all sorts of problems, so be careful. 2) T(e)white clip level in the ADO drops the same
amount as you drop the blacks. So if you're trying to "stretch" the contrast ratio by
lowering the blacks and amplifying the video forget it, it won't work. I had this happen
to me just the other day. We had a 1" tape come in which had been shot with the blacks
misadjusted in the camera. I brought the blacks down OK but couldn't bring the video back
up to a normal level. I merely laid this offto another tape and then raised the TBC video
level on PB. I hope this helps anyone needing to adjust pedestal in ADO. Its not perfect
but then it isn't a perfect world is it?*If the above isn't clear or if you have more
questions about this procedure I'dbe glad to help. Just leave me a note.*Roger

Paul, I've done severel inside-a-cube type of effects with the ADO and its quite simply
accomplished by changing the Z-azis parameter to a (+)plus 3 rather than a (-)minus 3 as
for an outside-the-cube effect. Try it and let me know how it works. Basically you're
mathematically positioning the sides of the cube 'around' you, rather than in front of you
with the traditional cube parameters. (CAUTION: "auto-cube" does not work with this
set-up so if you plan to move around inside your "room" a lot, you must do a lot of
stop-and-go editing, changing each new opposite face to a 180 degree change as its
revealed. HOPE THIS HELPS! Roger

Maybe I've asked this before, but does anyone out there know how to modify a BVH-2000 in
order to make it provide "switched" time code data at its Remote-2 connector, instead of
longitudinal time code only? By "switched", I mean the 3-position time-code switch on the
front edge of the TC card. This switch selects Longitudinal Only, VITC Only, or AUTO. But
the selected time code data is only sent to the front panel timer display, as far as I can
tell. I would like to be able to send the same time-code data to my editor via RS-422 from
the Remote-2 connector, so that the editor would automatically select VITC at slow speeds,
and LTC at high speeds. Anybody solved this one at their own facility?Dave

using the Type 3 remote panel, although VITC data is not displayed properly, as it is on

We have evaluated the motion control on the Ampex vs Sony with CMX 3600/3400 Dynamic
Motion Memory. CMX says that Sony offers more choices of speed control on the serial port.
Basically the difference is that Ampex has 64 speed choicesbetween 0 fps (freeze) and 30
fps. Sony has 256 speed choices. CMX has improvedon the lack of Ampex choices in the area
around 30 fps (The most common speeds needed for speed ups of shows) by using TSO`s (Tape
Speed Over-rides.) TSO are normally used for syncing the machines during pre-roll. Since
CMX did this additional work on the Ampex interface, your test would show the Ampex to be
equal to the Sony. However if you look at other speeds you will find the Sony far
superior. Basically, there are windows, one of which is 0-30 another is 0 to minus 30
another is 30-60 fps. In all cases Ampex gives 64 choices and Sony gives 256.

I think that being able to read an ADO effect on an IBM computer is an excellent idea.
However I think that any system that allows you to read the ADO effect data should also
allow you to change that data by editing or by direct entry. Some years ago Quantel had a
utility for a Apple computer that allowed the creation of DPE 5000 effects offline of the
digital effects device by direct numeric entry of size, position etc. This data was then
transfered to a disk drive attached to the Apple and could then be taken to the digital
effects device. Also data created on the 5000 could be read off of disk and modified. If
Ampex can get an IBM computer to read the data, they shounD@ j|able to manipulate it.
It might also be nice to have a simple raster graphic display of how size and position
might appear, depending on how close they can get the IBM math to match that of the ADO.

Thanks to Steve Gabriel, one of the original designers of the ADO, here are some
interesting but useless items. The ADO keyboard talks to the controller at 9600 bd. The
controller talks to the central processing unit at 153,600 bd! One channel of ADO has 3.5
mega bites of memory. Considering that the ADO was designed in 1979, putting 3.5 mega
bites of memory into the box (when memory chips were $32.00 each) was a pretty bold step.
But as we all know memory chips fell to about 90 cents two years later.I found all this
out during an afternoon visit with Steve Gabriel. He is one of the wizards sent to the
ivory tower to design the best box possible. That the ADO is still competative and still
the industry standard TEN years later, is a tribute to him. I hope everyone say hello and
