This is awesome, thanks!

Adding the tips on $(document).ready, though, doesn't quite work in my case. I suspect that's because the document is ready indeed, but d3 is still busy generating the SVG behind the scenes (as I'm loading data via Ajax/JSON, maybe). I overcame the issue by adding the tips right at the bottom of the chart building code.

Glad it helped!

You're right, the tipsy call should be made after d3 has created the dom elements it needs. In your case I would do d3 and tipsy methods in that order, in the "success" callback of an ajax request.
