How to fix Chromebook "no sound" after installing Ubuntu

  • Open up a terminal window and type sudo alsa force-unload to kill the audio services
  • Replace the system’s sound config file with the downloaded version:
    • Type sudo cp ~/Downloads/asound.state /var/lib/alsa
  • Reboot your Chromebook

What I did, and then replicated four different times with various Ubuntu distros, was use side booted Linux after getting that functionality up & running and then reached into chrome’s own os and extracted the entire “alsa” file. Once I had installed Linux Light 3.6 onto the internal drive (wiping out chrome) I again side booted and trans-planted the alsa file I’d saved into Linux Light. Upon reboot of LL I opened Synaptic and did a reinstall of Pulse Audio. Bam. Done deal. However, this came after weeks of struggling with driver/ kernel versions.... so please note that the newer kernels don’t have the right driver, and that so far I’ve had success with all the 4.4 kernels and personally don’t require anything higher. Also, when I first booted the sound, each time I ran the experiment within different distros, the sound was choppy and garbled until I turned the volume up and down a couple times and it came fully ‘up-to-speed’. It ends up working with everything, to include that old problem of the headphone jack not muting the speakers. Hope this helps.
Oh...Black Lab Linux had too new a kernel so I regressed it to 4.4 and had immediate success.

I had a similar problem in my Chromebook ASUS C300, I tried several different approaches and the only one that worked for me was using kernel 4.4 along with this method described here of using "asound.state" file. I'm running Ubuntu 18.04 with a kernel from Ubuntu 16.04

I am all the way there, but it tells me the asound.state file doesn't exist.

I tried this method and was unsuccessful in get the speakers to work on my Samsung Chromebook 3. I was running Ubuntu 18.04. I decided to try Xubunu 20.04 to lean more about that version. After trying it out for a while I decided to upgrade to Xubuntu 22.04. Lucky me! The speakers came to life and surprised me with sound. I was using a USB stick for testing, but did an install just to see what would happen. . If you want to get sound from your Samsung Chromebook give Xubuntu 22.04 a try. I think the install was upgraded to inclide drivers for Samsung.Good luck!

Although my Chromebook sound worked when I quickly checked, later I discovered that pulseaudio was crashing after a few minutes usage. The crash resulted in a loud tone that kept going on even after I stopped playing music. THis bug has been reported to Xubuntu.
