Jeremy Weiland’s remarks during city council, Feb 10, 2020
My name is Jeremy Weiland and I live in the 5th district. I support a motion to strike. Tons of great arguments have been made, but I want to make a different point.
We need a moratorium on these schemes that use tax funds for private development. We have infrastructure, schools and people that need direct, immediate attention. Leadership in this city keeps wanting the private real estate development community to hand them miracles on a silver platter. It represents the rejection of democracy and of politics as a means for conducting the public’s business. All of these schemes like Navy Hill rely upon a belief that progress is something that gets done to us, not something we participate in. If you want to know who will help you organically create a better Richmond, look at all the people here participating, eager to make some mark on the place they call home. The idea we have to make the wealthy even richer just to keep from going under as a city is a deeply discredited myth that needs to be ended, not just here on the navy hill issue, but on the next hairbrained scheme that comes along. Thank you.
