Outreach and networking
As we've discussed, meeting people, forming relationships, and having conversations are the key pieces to getting your foot in the door at any company. It's important to be proactive in your approach to outreach and networking, so it's necessary to make a plan for what you'll try in Module 3.
Meetups/Networking Events: Identify 1 meetup and/or other networking event that you'll attend between now and the end of Module 3. Answer these questions:
Why will you attend this particular event?
The event that I plan to attend is the monthly ReactJS meetup. I want to attend because I enjoy React but I also know I have a lot to learn. It will be the first tech event I've attended and I think it will be fairly small so I believe it would be easier to find someone to connect with.
Who do you hope to connect with at this event?
I'd like to connect to someone that currently writes react at their job daily. I hope I can find someone that is willing to share advice and demonstrate what real world code and best practices with React look like.
How will you follow-up with the people you connect at this event?
I will make business cards over Thanksgiving break and create a personal website. Until those things are prepared I plan to email them and set up a time over break to discuss React more in depth.
Warm Outreach: Identify a mentor, alum, or someone else in the Turing community you will reach out to by the end of Module 3. If you have someone you'd like to reach out to outside of the Turing community, go for it! Describe:
Why you want to connect with this person and what you hope to talk about
I went to high school with a guy who now works as a front end dev for Nintendo and I've been wanting to reach out to him. It's sort of awkward to reach out to someone from high school because he is much further in his career than I am but I know he is a great developer and is deeply involved with the tech scene since he works for Nintendo in Seattle. I'd like to get an inside perspective on the bigger tech scene of the west coast and how to be successful. He must have set himself apart in a big way or have excellent networking skills to work at Nintendo so those are the main things I'd like to discuss with him.
When you will contact them by and how you plan to meet
I will contact him before Thanksgiving so I will actually have time to set up a google hangout or phone call.
What your follow-up will look like once you've met with them
I won't be able to meet with him in person since he lives in Seattle but I believe I will be able to follow up with an email to thank him for taking the time to talk to me and I hope to establish an open line of communication as I continue to go through Turing and transition into a tech career.
