EDIT: Since this original post, the BikeShed has become a separate entity completely separate from GitHub and any other sponsors. The charter is to continue to provide community support and involvement in technology wherever and whenever we can.
This just also happens to be a co-working space. ๐
In October of 2013, the Nashville team was told that the building where we occupied a co-working space had been sold. Since that time, we have been working to find ourselves a new home. The upside/downside is that Nashville has exploded over the last 3 years, and this effort turned out to be much harder than expected. But, the time has come where we have finally ๐ขed our new space, and we'd love to have you over and see!
Our new office location is at 530 Church St, Suite 400a, Nashville, TN, 37219.
The space was a new co-working effort by TenantBase, a new startup in Nashville that helps match businesses with available office rental space. After many months of unsuccessful searching, these guys started a build-out of a poof-of-concept to build much more co-working space.
When you arrive, you are greeted with some wonderful signage (h/t @jameswhite's brother who made these vinyl stickers out of our public media assets)
... which opens up into the common area of the co-working space, complete with conference room.
... and then comes our space.
Several notable additions to this office to call out:
- Full double - kegerator. @rick acquired this beauty from a brewmaster friend who coincidentally also brings by tasty homebrews. We lovingly created a tap handle out of his head with modeling software @azizshamim gathered up, and superimposed it on an existing tap handle. Concept to finished product - ~5 hours. (includes printing time)
- 10 foot farm table. Lovingly suppled by @jameswhite, this custom made farm table can seat 10, complete with power for every person. Early beta-testing show this is ideal for hacking, drinking ๐ป, or playing board games.
- Phillips Hue bulbs in every lamp/window. Currently wired up for a few uses - pulses yellow or red during Outages. We are also playing with having a blue color toggle for "I'm heads down, don't bother me". (You would think headphones would do it, but we tend to have very rambunctious debates about tech/science/politics during the workday at random, blue would be a kind 'abstain'). More importantly, Disco Mode!
- 65" Plasma TV for epic beer:30 talks, PS3 gaming, or other tom-foolery to be had during the week(-end). (h/t @jameswhite for our epic stand holding up the TV)
- Raspberry PI's everywhere! - We'll be exploring creating Dashing dashboards to show the various metrics/data about GitHub during work hours, and fun cat-pictures or otherwise during the off-hours. We also have cameras to check out what's going on in the office from anywhere! (http://watchtower.websages.com/cameras/office.html)
Our goal was simple: we are Technologists that are and want to continue to be involved with the local community. With the ample hack space that we currently have (in-office viking table, shared co-working space), we have room to host meetup groups, hack nights, Nashville Software School study sessions, etc. We have room to host ~25-35 people without breaking a sweat, which is difficult to find in general in Nashville. On top of that, we wanted to try and capture a bit of the GitHub spirit combined with the BNA team to have a place that reflected a nice place to want to work. I am glad to say that we have achieved that goal.
If you're ever in Nashville, know that you have a space to hack, friends to ๐บ with, and of course, dat ๐ฅ ๐ and ๐ ๐ต to soothe your soul.
Github has Github Pages for stuff like this if you're interested in giving it some pizzazz ๐
