Adding subdirectory of a remote repo to a subdirectory in local repo

This is way more complicated than it should be. The following conditions need to be met :

  1. need to be able to track and merge in upstream changes
  2. don't want remote commit messages in master
  3. only interested in sub-directory of another repo
  4. needs to go in a subdirectory in my repo.

In this particular case, I'm interested in bringing in the 'default' template of jsdoc as a sub-directory in my project so I could potentially make changes to the markup it genereates while also being able to update from upstream if there are changes. Ideally their template should be a separate repo added to jsdoc via a submodule -- this way I could fork it and things would be much easier.... but, it is what it is.

After much struggling with git, subtree and git-subtree, I ended up finding this http://archive.h2ik.co/2011/03/having-fun-with-git-subtree/ -- it basically sets up separate branches from tracking remote, the particular sub-directory, and uses git subtree contrib module to pull it all togther. Makes Zsh print a bell when long-running commands finish. I use this in combination with i3 and throw big compile jobs (or whatever it may be) into another workspace to get a nice visual notification (workspace indicator turns red) when it's done so I don't need to waste time regularly checking on it.
#!/usr/bin/env zsh
# This script prints a bell character when a command finishes
# if it has been running for longer than $zbell_duration seconds.
# If there are programs that you know run long that you don't
# want to bell after, then add them to $zbell_ignore.
#
# This script uses only zsh builtins so its fast, there's no needless
# forking, and its only dependency is zsh and its standard modules

Rsync over SSH - (40MB/s over 1GB NICs)

The fastest remote directory rsync over ssh archival I can muster (40MB/s over 1gb NICs)

This creates an archive that does the following:

rsync (Everyone seems to like -z, but it is much slower for me)

  • a: archive mode - rescursive, preserves owner, preserves permissions, preserves modification times, preserves group, copies symlinks as symlinks, preserves device files.
  • H: preserves hard-links
  • A: preserves ACLs
