Words/Chords to the Eternal Flame
The Eternal Flame (God Wrote in Lisp)
Bob Kanefsky / Julia Ecklar
F G C
I was taught assembler in my second year of school.
F G C
It's kinda like construction work, with a toothpick for a tool.
F G C Em Am
So when I made my senior year, I threw my code away,
F G C
And learned the way to program that I still prefer today.
F G C
Now, some folks on the Internet put their faith in C++.
F G C
They swear that it's so powerful, it's what God used for us.
F G C Em Am
And maybe it lets mortals dredge their objects from the C.
F G C
But I think that explains why only God can make a tree.
F G C
For God wrote in Lisp code
F G C
When he filled the leaves with green.
F G C Am
The fractal flowers and recursive roots:
F G
The most lovely hack I've seen.
F G C F G C
And when I ponder snowflakes, never finding two the same,
F C F G C
I know God likes a language with its own four-letter name.
F G C
Now, I've used a SUN under Unix, so I've seen what C can hold.
F G
I've surfed for Perls, found what Fortran's for,
C
Got that Java stuff down cold.
F G
Though the chance that I'd write COBOL code
C Em Am
is a SNOBOL's chance in Hell.
F G C
And I basically hate hieroglyphs, so I won't use APL.
F G C
Now, God must know all these languages, and a few I haven't named.
F G
But the Lord made sure, when each sparrow falls,
C
that its flesh will be reclaimed.
F G C Em Am
And the Lord could not count grains of sand with a 32-bit word.
F G C
Who knows where we would go to if Lisp weren't what he preferred?
F G C
And God wrote in Lisp code
F G C
Every creature great and small.
F G C Am
Don't search the disk drive for man.c,
F G
When the listing's on the wall.
F G C
And when I watch the lightning
F G C
Burn unbelievers to a crisp,
F C F
I know God had six days to work,
G C
So he wrote it all in Lisp.
F C F
Yes, God had a deadline.
G C
So he wrote it all in Lisp.
