Haskell VS Groovy
// This is a comparison between Haskell and Groovy based on some simple problems found in the following
// Haskell Introduction:

// Ex 1. If we have two lists, [2,5,10] and [8,10,11] and we want to get the products of all the possible
// combinations between numbers in those lists, here's what we'd do.
/* HASKELL */
[ x*y | x <- [2,5,10], y <- [8,10,11]]

Explanation for why `its` will be removed from rspec-3

its isn't core to RSpec. One the of the focuses of RSpec is on the documentation aspects of tests. Unfortunately, its often leads to documentation output that is essentially lies. Consider this spec:

User = Struct.new(:name, :email)

describe User do
  subject { User.new("bob") }
  its(:name) { should == "bob" }
end

How to securely acquire the Mozilla root certificate bundle for use with curl, Net::HTTP, etc.

If you want to use curl or net-http/open-uri to access https resources, you will often (always?) get an error, because they don't have the large number of root certificates installed that web browsers have.

You can manually install the root certs, but first you have to get them from somewhere. This article gives a nice description of how to do that. The source of the cert files it points to is hosted by the curl project, who kindly provide it in the .pem format.

problem: Sadly, ironically, and comically, it's not possible to access that file via https! Luckily, the awesome curl project does provide us with the script that they use to produce the file, so we can do it securely ourselves. Here's how.

  1. git clone https://github.com/bagder/curl.git
  2. cd curl/lib
  3. edit mk-ca-bundle.pl and change:

Digesting VMDK spec

Particularly, virtual disks types are very confusing. This document is an attempt to disentangle that and make easier the design of an implementation.

Flat or preallocated disk

  • Monolithic or one-file: Single flat extent with separate descriptor file. createType: monolithicFlat
  • Split or multiple files: 2gb preallocated extents or smaller, to account for file system limits. createType: 2GbMaxExtentFlat
  • VMFS (managed):
    • Zeroed: Thick (flat) disk on VMFS, with blocks zeroed on first use. createType: vmfsPreallocated

I highly suspect that the RSpec core team all use black backgrounds in their terminals because sometimes the colors aren’t so nice on my white terminal

I certainly use a black background. I'm not sure about the other RSpec core folks. Regardless, if there are some color changes we can make that would make output look good on a larger variety of backgrounds, we'll certainly consider that (do you have some suggested changes?). In the meantime, the colors are configurable, so you can change the colors to fit your preferences on your machine. First, create a file at
