Introduction to Analytics

Class Objective:

The goal of this class is to discuss the broader issues of data analytics, the approach of the class, and the technologies to be utilized. We will get you setup on the necessary platforms and get the necessary technologies installed to get started with both Python and R.

Readings (To be done before class):

No readings today but please do the following that will make the first class go more smoothly.

• Fill out this survey.
• Sign up for Piazza.
• Sign up for Github.
• Sign up for Microsoft account.
• Install Github Desktop.
• Install Docker.

In Class Activities:

• Presentation.
• Join the AnalyticDojo.
• Data Analytics Platforms.
• Conceptual Overview.
• I'll distribute codes to get you setup with Microsoft Azure worth $100/month per Student.
• We'll demonstrate Github Desktop and Docker.

Assignment (due the second Wednesday following class by 11:59 PM):

1. Be setup with Docker/Microsoft Azure ML Studio/Piazza or make me aware of issues via Piazza. You should have an understanding of how to run a notebook (we will be running a lot of them in class) and how to get data in and out.
2. Complete Join the Analytics Dojo and Data Analytics Platforms on rpi.analyticsdojo.com (sign up and then click on Lessons and step through each).
3. Submit to Blackboard. Select one of the available datasets on Microsoft Azure. Describe the data. What type of data is it. (Just one paragraph....but it will demonstrate that you have been able to navigate a number of different technologies).
