Mentors Slack Group

We've created a Bloc Mentor Slack Group. If you want to be added, just send me your email. Either respond directly to this or email me at RRP54@cornell.edu.

Introductory Message

Hi teammates,

My name is Ricky. I'm a fellow Rails and iOS Mentor residing in NYC.

It's time! It's time to have our own mentor Slack Group. Students across curriculums have already been using their own Slack Groups to seek help from fellow students, and it's been proving extremely helpful. I'm sure it would do the same for us mentors.

Being remote as a mentor, it's often tough to find a sense a community especially with other mentors. This group would help us do that and in addition: discuss best practices in mentoring the roadmaps, any issues on the fly when helping a students, curriculum flaws, and nerd out over code.

I've discussed this with Ben Neely and Chris Beck, and both of them are in support of this, along with many other mentors I've talked with.

We created a Rails Mentor Slack Group. Adoption has been great over the past two days, and we realized that many channels would be common between the different groups of mentors. From researching other teams, we learned that's how they use Slack, one group with subteams as separate channels. Someone suggested it on the Bloc thread, and we think that's a great idea. That's why we've turned it into the Bloc Mentors Group.

If you want to be added, just send me your email. Either respond directly to this or email me at RRP54@cornell.edu.

Cheers, -Ricky

Q & A

Gitter vs Slack?

Structure

  • In Slack we can have multiple channels in the same group. In order to do that in Gitter, you would have to create a new room/channel, and reinvite people. Slack will help better facilitate different discussions as the group needs, which is really important
  • With a Bloc Mentor Slack, we can have mentor wide conversations, and individual roadmap conversations all in the same group.

Students

  • Our students already use Slack, and it's arguably the most helpful channel for them. By also being on Slack, we are more likely to have a pulse on how our students are, since they are in the same application. For Rails, we have FullSlackers, and for iOS, we have Bloc iOS. Let me know if you want me to invite you to either since I have access to both, where Full Stack and iOS students have been helping each other.

I like that you can use markdown and proper ruby syntax highlighting

Hey, what's wrong with the gitter group we already have?

  • It feels inappropriate to discuss a specific roadmap on a mentor wide chat
  • Activity is sparse given the number of mentors and number of convos that could be happening

IRC support?

How do I Join?

  • Just send me your email. Either respond directly to this or email me at RRP54@cornell.edu. I will add you.
