For my desk and laptop bag:
- Rotring Rapid Pro Ballpoint Pen
- Schmidt EasyFlow 9000 Refill - Medium - Black
- Glides across paper effortlessly. Stock Rotring refill might be better if you’re left handed and/or drag your palm across the paper.
For around the house and in my car:
- Fisher Space Pen Cap-O-Matic
- Pressurized stock refill is perfect for jottings in any situation. I like raw brass for the patina.
Mechanical:
- Rotring Rapid Pro Drafting Pencil 0.7mm
- 0.7mm because I’m heavy handed and break all 0.5mm leads. Get it in the opposite color as the pen if you end up with both and want to be able to tell them apart.
- Pilot Neox Graphite 0.7mm HB Lead
Wood:
- Mitsubishi Recycled Wood Pencils - HB, Black Eraser
- I love bare-wood pencils because the paint doesn’t chip and they’re grippier without any gimmicks. Graphite in these is excellent and the erasers are the best I’ve found on the end of a pencil.
- Ticonderoga Renew #2 Pencils
- Same deal as the Mitsubishis, just not 100% of the way there. I like these a lot and they’re easier to find at big-box stores.
- Ticonderoga Tri-Conderoga Triangular #2 Pencils
- Thicker, triangle-shaped pencils. I have a weird pencil grip and these generally more comfortable for long-form writing. They don’t roll off tables, making them handy, easily-sharpened carpenter pencils for home improvement projects. The large size is kid-friendly too and fits perfectly into larger sharpener of my following recommendation.
- Staedtler Double Hole Sharpener
- Excellent general-purpose sharpener with a large reservior.
- Blackwing Long-Point Sharpener
- Beautiful and creates cartoonishly sharp pencil tips.
- Sakura Arch Eraser
- Pentil Clic Eraser
- In my cup of writing instruments. Convenient but not as good as the Sakura.
- TOPS Yellow Narrow Ruled Legal Pad
- Can’t go wrong with the classics. Perfect for longform writing. Go with narrow or college ruled instead of wide for more lines per page.
- Mead Five Star Small 9 1/2" x 6" Side Spiral Notebooks
- Easy to find at Target and the perfect size for taking notes.
- Kyokuto B7 6mm Rule Top Spiral Notebook
- Tiny flip notebook. I keep one in my back pocket with a Fisher Bullet Pen for taking hand-written notes on the go or at my desk if my notebook is in my laptop bag. Field Notes never worked for me 🤷♂️
- Maruman B7 6.5mm Rule Side Spiral Notebook
- Has a side spiral if you want to write on both sides of the page.
