Front End Developer @ Envato

Front End Developer @ Envato

Hi, we're Envato and we want to expand the number of front-end developers working on our marketplaces by 200%. That's right, you'll be the second one we've got!

The easiest way to describe the role is to just explain what Stu, our current front-end hotshot does: pretty much everything. You'll be working directly with our template code (ERB if you already know rails), with the design coming from any or all of: nice photoshop designs, wireframes, and vague suggestions of "make that work and be pretty". There's the occasional marketing style landing page to be made, the occasional HTML email template, and a whole bunch of design iteration on our marketplaces.

As this is the role that takes us from a front-end dev to a front-end "team", exactly how we're going to share out that work and run things are a bit up in the air right now, but that gives us some freedom to arrange things to play to the strengths of whichever candidate comes through the front door.

Possibly the best part of the role is our current Browser breakdown across all of our marketplaces. Currently it's 43% Firefox, 25% Chrome, 16% Safari, 11% IE, and 3% Opera. I'll just leave that right there.

The toughest part: our CEO is a graphic designer, likes things to be pretty and demands a high attention to detail. The other tough part: the development manager (the writer of this ad) is a stickler for well separated logic and presentation, and we're pushing into a lot of test driving javascript. If you can satisfy both of those requirements, you'll most likely thrive in this role.

First though: a bit about us. We're a youngish company, transitioning out of the hectic startup days and into something a bit bigger and more settled. We operate a series of online stock digital media marketplaces such as Activeden (formerly FlashDen), GraphicRiver, ThemeForest, AudioJungle, VideoHive, 3DOcean, and CodeCanyon. The first marketplace, ActiveDen, launched to the public around 3 and a half years ago, and the rest is history. We're doing around 3 million page requests daily, and have well over 700k registered users. That's a lot of people looking at your work every day.

We've been in NETT magazine, had 37signals cover us in their "Bootstrapped, Profitable, and Proud" series (see http://37signals.com/svn/posts/2594-bootstrapped-profitable-proud-envato ), and we even blog a bit ourselves over at http://notes.envato.com/category/developers/

You'll be joining a team of 8-ish developers, and in office staff of around 20. We have flexible working hours (you can start any time each day between 8 and 10 and then work your 8 hours), there's no dress code (but please don't give us cause to add one), and we have a totally sweet pool table.

Work wise, we try and stick to an agile process. We're working really hard on increasing the collaboration between design and development at the moment: we already weren't much of a "throw a PSD over the wall" shop, but we're hoping to get even better in this area.

To come work for us, you'll preferably tick all of the boxes below, but if you're missing a few and still feel you're a good match, apply anyway.

Essential Requirements

  • Be a nice person
  • Communicate well in person and in writing
  • Be a curious person committed to continual learning
  • Be capable of writing clean, semantic HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
  • Be happy to work on all aspects of front-end work: everything from big redesigns, marketing carve-ups, to sorting out little annoying line height shenanigans

Preferred Requirements

  • Be a nice person && be funny
  • Done front end development in a Ruby on Rails environment previously
  • Have experience working with Sass/Scss and/or jQuery
  • Have past "product based" experience
  • Have strong UX experience
  • Contribute to Open Source projects

To apply email us at techjobs@envato.com with the subject line "Colonel, take us to DEFCON five." and attach your CV, but with a twist.

We're only going to accept resumes in HTML so we can get a feel for your markup and aesthetic. Word documents and the like will be filed in the mesh sided, circular filing cabinet.

If you've got open source work, please send us links (github accounts are best), or zip up some examples for us.

This is a Melbourne CBD based full-time role. Contractors, part-timers, or remote workers probably shouldn't apply.

PS. For Recruiters: Please don't contact us. Seriously.
