RG Melbs Coaches Mail
Hi Coaches!
We are so glad to have you on board for Rails Girls this weekend. Here are further details of our schedule for Friday and Saturday, and what to expect. We will also invite you all to our Slack group, so if you have any questions at all please feel free to contact us via email, phone or in Slack.
As with all Ruby Australia events we're bound by the Ruby Australia code of conduct (found at: http://ruby.org.au/code-of-conduct.html), let's hope we don't need it but please do make sure you know who the orgnaisers are and be at least familiar with the document.
The event is at REA, 511 Church Street, Richmond 3121 - you'll see the REA logo on the building. Head to the front door and there will be somebody to let you in - if you can't see anyone, please call Kate (0409 337 107) or Jo (0428 190 881).
We'll kick off around 6pm on Friday, so it would be great if you can make it over to REA by 5:30pm to get set up. We understand that might not be possible for all of you, so we'll try and make sure you have all the info you need to jump right in if need be! Saturday will start at 9:30am, and we'll have coffee all day as well as a catered lunch and snacks.
Our plan is to have one mentor at each table and a couple of people floating around. So obviously feel free to catch up with each other but as people are settling down please pick a table without a mentor on it, or if there doesn't seem to be one, then sit wherever you like! You shouldn't really need your computer but it can be useful to demonstrate things or quickly look up the answer to an unexpected question, so we'll leave it up to you either way.
It's a better experience for the attendees if they can install Ruby and Rails locally to do the project, but we know from experience that some people will have trouble, so as a backup option they can use Cloud9 (https://c9.io/). There are instructions on the Rails Girls website here, if you'd like to have a look beforehand: http://guides.railsgirls.com/install/
On Saturday we'll be working through the standard Rails Girls program, starting with the tryruby.org tutorial, then building an app using the Rails Girls guide here: http://guides.railsgirls.com/app/
The schedule is as follows:
Friday - Installation and Networking
5:30 Mentor Briefing
6 Sign in
6:15 Welcome talk
7:30 How the Web Works talk (Keira)
8:00 Installation of RoR
9 Wrap up
Saturday - App Workshop
9:30 Mentor Briefing
10am Sign in
10:15 Welcome talk
12pm Lunch
3 Breaking into the Industry talk
3:30 Afternoon tea
4:30 Sponsors talk
5:30 Wrap up & Coaches Retrospective
For the sponsors talk, we'll invite representatives from our sponsors to casually talk a little about what their company does, their role specifically as well as why you chose to work with Rails/things that are awesome about your job. If you have any questions about this feel free to ask.
Looking forward to seeing you all at REA on Friday!
Robert, Kate, Jo, Paula, & Nicolas
