Notes

I’ve found it effective to consider BPD in relationship to other disorders.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) vs Bipolar

BPD is a personality disorder, whereas Bipolar is a mood disorder.

Bipolar results in mania, or extreme mood swings that may last weeks.

BPD results in extreme and momentary mood spikes where each mood may only last an hour, or even just 10 minutes.

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) vs Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID)

DID: many personalities, many emotions. This person exhibits multiple personalities, for example the 40 year old and the three year old, each with all the associated emotions.

BPD: one personality, one emotion at a time. This person exhibits extremely focused slices of one personality, for example only extreme anger or happiness.
