Step 3:
1. My greatest strength is my loyalty and dedication to my friends and family, to all my loved ones. I know this because
I'm surrounded by fantastic individuals. They're all successful in their careers but when I say fantastic I mean that they
are kind, caring, intellegent and mature individuals. They strive for success but still look out for others. People like
this wouldn't be around me if they didn't see some sort of loyalty and dedication, they see something in me too. My
srongest driver is building and maintaining close realtionships with others.
2. I work best with general guidlines and the freedom to interpret those guidelines myself. I do best when dealing with
issues at hand that I understand the relevance of. I interpret the world in a very straightforward manner. If I receive
instruction it needs to be straightforward and sincere. I struggle to read between the lines and appreciate when the
instructions are blunt.
3. My greatest area of improvement is to draw on the experiences of others to develop a broad understanding of situations.
I definetely have confidence in my own abilities and tend to rely on my own abilities a bit too much. I need to improve on
relying on others and trusting their abilities. Their experiences can develop my understanding of the world.
4. I hope to maximize my stengths by building strong relationships with my fellow students and the instructors. My strongest
driver is to build close relationships. Those close relationships are the how I'm going to see the world from others'
perspectives. These relationships and new views of the world will allow me to lean on others' strengths and develop into
a better person. The process goes both ways!
5. Knowing my strengths allows me to focus on my weaknesses. Knowing the areas I struggle in allow me to improve those skills
or ask for help from teammates. Knowing my working preferences allows me to create the most effecient working environment for
myself. If I'm comfortable in my working environment I'm more inclined to enjoy whatever the work is and to create a more
positive work environment. Similar to my stengths, it allows me to get out of my shell and learn to work in different
environments. Software engineers are constantly learning and growing. Knowing my strengths and preferences allows me to
expand my strengths and preference. It also allows me to help others do the same.
Step 5:
1. In college, outside of finals, I could usually learn with distractions in the background. I had to. I had roommates.
The biggest step I've taken to manage my learning to process is to avoid distractions. I finally created a separate
office where I can close out the world and focus. These efforts have been mostly successfully. I still have a 10 month old
puppy and live with a girlfriend who works remotely (upstairs). I still have multiple projects to finish before Mod 1 starts.
Unfortunately the world always has distractions and I need to practice focusing with their presence. I can create an environment
that reduces those distractions, but they always be there. I'm starting to learn to ignore them until an appropriate time.
2. Coates' had one line that really stood out to me. "To "have it," I must manage my emotional health.". In order to be
succesfull I have to be in a good place mentally. That means constantly improving my lifestyle and working on improving
myself outside of programming. Sierra talks about doing things that burn others' cognitive ability. Avoiding the drive-through
on the way home is actually a pretty good metaphor. When working in a team, or with just yourself, try to make decisions or
communicate in ways that would give others (or yourself) the cognitive energy and ability to avoid the greasy drive-through
on the way home after work. The less you stress and exhaust your teammates the more you improve their mental health. Then
they'll begin to do the same with you.
3. If you're in a poor emotional state you can't learn. We've all been there in some capacity. I went through a period
of depression in college and my grades suffered for the first time in my academic career. If you don't care about yourself
how are you supposed to care about the material in front of you? How are you supposed to care about your classmates?
When I'm excited to wake up in the morning and challenge myself with new material I'm significantly more inclined to dive
into whatever work I have in front of me.
4. The most important preperation to be at my best while at Turing is to start scheduling and planning mental health time now.
I have to make plans for hobbies and relaxation and I have to start now. I need to plan time for myself to inner reflect. Class
is going to be finished at 4:00 p.m. everyday so I'm going to change my schedule to exercise everyday at 4:00 p.m. so that habit
carries over to turing. I'm also going to lean on my support system more than I ever have. I live with an incredible
girlfriend whom I can lean on for support during the program and beyond. I'm never alone an understanding that is a key to
being at my best mentally and physically for Turing.
