Prayers Before Commencing Work

Troparia and Kontakia to be used during the work day

To those who stumble upon this gist, herein are contained some short prayers to the following Orthodox Christian saints:

  • Elder Porphyrios (for he was a light unto scientists, mathematicians, and engineers in the 1990's, having been givin Divine insight into the intricate workings of nature beyond the scientific knowledge of that time)
  • Saint Patrick (for he built Churches, drove out "snakes" (how many of those do we encounter in our code??), and was exiled and forced to work as a slave. He is considered officially to be a Patron of Engineers by the Church).
  • St. Hubert (for his skill with metalwork and smithing, he is also considered a patron of mathematicians and engineers)
  • St. Eligius (patron of goldsmiths, metalworkers, and of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers of the British Army)

With the exception of St. Porphyrios, all other Saints are common to the Catholic Church, as well, if there are any Catholics with interest.

Elder Porphyrios of Kavsokalyvia (Dec 2) Troparion 1st Mode

The son of Evia, the Elder of All Greeks,
The initiate of Divine Vision and True friend of Christ.
Porphyrios, O faithful, let us praise
Who from childhood was filled with divine gifts.
The demonized are redeemed and the sick are healed who cry out:
“Glory to Him who gave His might to thee!
Glory to Him who made thee Holy!
Glory to Him, who, through thee, grantest healing to all."

Saint Patrick, Apostle to the Irish Troparion 3rd Mode

Holy Bishop Patrick
Faithful shepherd of Christ's royal flock
You filled Ireland with the radiance of the Gospel
The mighty strength of the Trinity
Now that you stand before the Savior
Pray that He may preserve us in Faith and Love.

St Hubert(us) of Liege

unable to find a troparion or kontakion

Glory to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Saint Eligius of Flanders Troparion 1st Mode

With gladsome voices let us celebrate the holy memory of Eligius,
The great beacon illuming Flanders and all the lands of the Franks,
For he set at naught the feeble attacks of the demons,
And by his charity rendered the faithful steadfast in piety.
Wherefore, joining chorus together, O ye Christians,
Let us all cry aloud to him:
Rejoice, O Eligius our father,
Who prayest earnestly for all who honor thy holy memory with love!

Both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

O Theotokos and Virgin, Regioce...

Prayer before commencing any task

Almighty God, our Help and Refuge, Fountain of wisdom and Tower of strength, who knowest that I can do nothing without thy guidance and help; assist me, I pray thee, and direct me to divine wisdom and power, that I may accomplish this task, and whatever I may undertake to do, faithfully and dilligently, according to thy will, so that it may be profitable to myself and others, and to the glory of thy Holy Name. For Thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit: now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Through the Prayers of our Holy Fathers, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
