Questions to ask interviewers

The Team

  • Can you tell me about the team I’ll be working with?
  • How do people on the team communicate/interact?
  • Can I meet the team?
  • Who will I work with most closely?
  • Who will I report to directly?
  • Can you tell me about my direct reports? What are their strengths and the team's biggest challenges?
  • Do you expect to hire more people in this department in the next six months?
  • Which other departments work most closely with this one?

Training and Professional Development

  • Can you describe your onboarding process?
  • How will I be trained?
  • How do you envision your new hire stepping into the role? Will they jump in and ask a lot of questions to learn the job, or do you expect them to follow a week-by-week or day-by-day training plan, or something else?
  • What training opportunities are available to your employees?
  • Where is the last person who held this job moving on to?

Performance and Evaluation

  • What are the performance expectations of this position over the first 12 months?
  • What metrics or goals will my performance be evaluated against?
  • What are your views on goals, timelines, and measuring success?
  • What is the performance review process like here? How often would I be formally reviewed?
  • How involved are employees in the structuring of their own goals and tasks?
  • How often are employees expected to provide status updates on a project?

Technical

  • What languages/frameworks/stacks are you using? How long have you been using them? What would cause you to change?
  • If a user submits a feature request, what's the process for turning that into code? (Prioritization, spec, user story, design, etc)
  • What tools are you using to track bugs and features?
  • What (if any) Agile processes have you adopted? How's it going?
  • What's your backlog like?
  • Does all code go through code review?
  • Do you have coding standards? Are they different from industry standards?
  • Merge or rebase?
  • Tools for deployment, virtualization, ... ?
  • How do you share knowledge? Wiki, confluence, talky talky?
