Some rough plan for Trans-Siberian train
Some basic info:
- Russian trains always run in Moscow time, that's why Moscow time is mentioned
- The track gauge is different in Mongolia and China, so there's always a stop on Chinese border
- We should try to have a get together in Beijing between July 1st and July 16th (Victorian school holidays),
it's a good time as well since end of June should be comfortable weather to travel in Siberia and there's
already more trains than usual.
- There is no time difference between most of Mongolia and Beijing, Irkutsk is one hour ahead of China which
is a bit awkward
Moscow - Irkutsk
- Train № 070Ч goes daily from Moscow to Irkutsk, leaving 13:50 Moscow time and arriving 4 days later 6:31 Moscow
time (12:31 Irkutsk time), discounted tickets. For example leaving on Monday would mean arrival on Friday.
- Generally all Trans-Siberian trains travel between Moscow and Irkutsk. There is a possibility to have a short
rest at Yekaterinburg, it is a nice city in Ural between Europe and Asia and about 1,5 days from Moscow
effectively splitting the Moscow-Irkutsk ride into two halves.
Irkutsk - Ulanbataar
- Train № 004З/K4 (Moscow-Beijing train) goes on Saturdays from Irkutsk to Ulanbataar, leaving 03:12 Moscow time
(09:12 Irkutsk time) and arriving on Sunday 06:50 Mongolian time.
- Train № 006Ч (Moscow-Ulanbataar train) goes on Mondays and uses the same schedule as 004З.
- Train № 362Ы (Irkutsk-Ulanbataar train) should go daily but less info available, apparently it's an interesting
scheme where you sit in two cars and they are switched from a Russian train to a Mongolian train in the border,
so you can switch trains without getting out. A little bit slower but not much.
Ulanbataar - Beijing
- Train № 024/K24 (Ulanbataar-Beijing train) goes every Thursday and Saturday, leaving at 7:15 and arriving on the
next day at 14:04.
- Train № 004З/K4 (Moscow-Beijing train) goes every Sunday, leaving at 07:15 and arriving on the next day at 11:40.
Based on the above timetables, here's a sample schedule of 12 days train ride:
- Leave from Moscow on Sunday (21st June)
- Arrive to Yekaterinburg on Monday
- Leave from Yekaterinburg on Wednesday
- Arrive to Irkutsk on Friday
- Leave from Irkutsk on Monday
- Arrive to Ulanbataar on Tuesday
- Leave from Ulanbataar on Thursday
- Arrive to Beijing on Friday (2nd July)
