Mentee: Define the Relationship (DTR) Prep

To start this assignment:

  1. Click the button in the upper right-hand corner that says Fork. This is now your copy of the document.
  2. Click the Edit button when you're ready to start adding your answers.
  3. To save your work, click the green button in the bottom right-hand corner. You can always come back and re-edit your gist.

Please use the following gist to capture your thoughts, goals, priorities, etc. as outlined by each question. You will be using these questions to help give your mentor a better idea of who you are and want to become as a developer! Please note, this is meant to be a starting point for building your norms with your mentor - you may need to adjust scheduling expecations, communication expectations, etc. when you start working with your mentor!

Mentee Details

  1. What is your preferred name?
  • Justin
  1. What are your pronouns?
  • he/him
  1. What did you do before Turing?
  • I was a growth marketing manager working on Offline Media Management (Podcast, Radio, YouTube) for clients in various industries (mostly direct to consumer businesses).
  1. What made you decide to come to Turing?
  • I found myself asking lots of technical questions as a marketer and the more I dug into software/coding to solve issues I was facing as a marketer, the more intrigued I was. Turing felt like a natural next step in my career.
  1. What are you most excited about exploring in your career in tech?
  • I think the various applications of software in different industries is really exciting. This really feels like just the beginning of what could be a really interesting career path. I don't necessarilly feel the need to "change the world", but I'd like to contribute to projects that reduce suffering in marginalized communities.

Scheduling Details

Please review the Mod 1 calendar for FE or BE when answering the following questions.

  1. What are your preferred times of day to connect with your mentor? (Early evening, lunch, etc.)
  • Lunch time is ideal (12pm - 1pm MT), but also open to early evening (4pm to 530pm MT).
  1. What are your known scheduling restrictions? (Family obligations, life obligations, etc.)
  • Monday through Friday I'm pretty flexible outside of class times.

Communication

  1. What is your preferred method to connect with your mentor? (Slack? Email? Text?)
  • Slack or text would be best
  1. What is your preferred cadence for communication? Twice a week? Weekly?
  • Weekly is better. That cadence allows me to reflect before our meeting and have better questions.
  1. What time frame can you commit to acknowledging you have seen a message if you are too busy to send a detailed response?
  • 1 to 2 hours from receipt of message (if I'm in class I would prefer to respond during a break).
  1. What time frame can you commit to sending a detailed response to a message when time permits?
  • Within 3 to 4 hours of receipt (I can write up a detailed response on lunch or dinner breaks if I receive the message during class hours).

Specific Support Requests

  1. What are the your technical strengths and areas for desired improvement?
  • I feel really good about my ability to use git and spent a lot of time reviewing and practicing during the Mod 0 Project. So far so good - but I'll be sure to be more specific in future innings and mods when I feel like I need more help understanding new concepts.
  1. Is there any specific technical topic that we should focus on this inning?
  • Mod 1 will be focused on OOP with Ruby, so ideally would love to focus on that. I'm sure I'll have more specific topics to focus on once I begin.
  1. Are there any topics from last inning that we should focus on reviewing?
  • Not really – I feel really good about git and even though I'm sure there's much more to learn about it's use, I have a pretty good idea on how to figure it out.

Concerns for this Inning

  1. Do you have anything that your mentor should be aware of? (upcoming life events, concerns about the upcoming curriculum, job hunt, etc)
  • I'm moving to NYC from Florida the weekend after Mod 1 is over. This shouldn't impact my availability or ability to complete my coursework.
  1. What do I need when I get overwhelmed?
  • Reassurance and guidance on how to overcome the obstacle I'm facing.
  1. Who are your supports and resources for this inning?
  • I have two friends who are Turing alumni (one BE and one FE) and they've encouraged me to lean on them and ask for help when I need it.

Write a draft of your introduction message to your mentor!

Be sure to include:

  • Your name and pronouns
  • Your program and cohort
  • What you did before coming to Turing

Hey {{Mentor}},

My name is Justin Ramirez (he/him) and it looks like I'll be your mentee! Looking forward to working with you and learning more about one another. Im in the BE 2205 cohort, and before coming to Turing I worked in Offline Marketing. In simpler terms, I managed podcast, radio, and YouTube advertising campaigns for various clients. Really excited that you'll be a part of my Turing journey and I hope that I can return the favor someday!

Thanks,

Justin
