Guide to Athens

Athens

You can pay by card everywhere and WiFi is also available almost everywhere (a luxury for Berlin residents). I recommend staying at Glyfada, which is a district outside of Athens. It has a lot of nice restaurants around and a beach.

Food & Coffee

  • Yi - My personal favorite restaurant in Athens. Great atmosphere and good prices considering the quality you get. We had a fig with cashew cheese appetizer (6 pieces for one order which I thought was enough for 2 very hungry people). Definitely try the Portobello Mushroom Medallions -- the best portobello mushrooms I've had in my life! They also have amazing teas. We had the Ginger Turmeric and Medicinal Tea while there.
  • Veganaki - Amazing veganized Greek food. I recommend their Greek, Dakos, and Gourmet salads. Their moussaka is also a must-try. And you must have the Kormos dessert while here!
  • Lime Bistro - Probably the most expensive restaurant of this bunch. Great service and delicious food. Try their mozzarella bites appetiser. Their menu consists of both Greek and non-Greek foods.
  • Roots Foods and Culture - A takeaway place. You can get cheap and good gyros here for 2.50 EUR each. Really delicious sauce.
  • Mystic Vegan - A vegan restaurant next to its non-vegan counterpart. They serve Italian and Greek food. In the same neighborhood as Roots Foods and Culture.
  • Vegan Beat - Vegan gyros made of mushrooms. 3.50 EUR for one gyro.
  • Dope Coffee - Name is cringe but this microroastery serves good coffee and has a nice seating area. Go upstairs for premium AC and quiet when you're in downtown Athens.

Activities

  • Acropolis, of course. A ticket costs 20 EUR and it's much faster to get it at the ticket machine. A lot of people line up for the ticket box operated by a human though I don't know why (and the staff doesn't either).
  • Kaolin Ceramic Workshop - 25 EUR for a 2 hour ceramic workshop. The owner and instructor, Marianna, was really nice and will let you do whatever kind of ceramic technique you want so long as you've had prior experience. You can also glaze your work for no additional fee and she will fire it in the kiln for you. It takes a week from the workshop until you can pick up your finished ceramic.
  • Acharneis - Excellent sector 30 minutes outside of Athens for some rock climbing. Open anchors and a local favorite crag. Bring a 60m rope and at least 12 quickdraws.
