1. Learning Fluency by Turing alum Sara Simon (30 min)

  • Your key take-aways OR how you're going to implement specific points (minimum 3):

  • Be aware of your learning processes, and change them up.

  • Do not compare your learning style to others', except with understanding that people are different, and differences are advantages. It's rarely beneficial to rank yourself.

  • Seek fluency and understanding, and creativity.

  • Things that confused you OR things that you have further questions/thoughts about (minimum 3):

  • I wonder how satisfied the author is in her career, and if it satisfies her need to challenge herself and grow.

  • I wonder how she enjoyed her time at Turing, if the program met her learning style.

  • Does the author see her learning style and career as sustainable for life? Why or why not?

  • Your key take-aways OR how you're going to implement specific points (minimum 3):

  • I am hopeful that these skills come easily. I know I use the internet differently than a lot of people I know, and it seems to align with the author's techniques (as far as I can tell, today).

  • Despite doing a lot of internet research, I've never opened all of the result tabs first. I like that.

  • Using a solid bookmarking system from Day 1 will bring the useful results back quickly.

  • Things that confused you OR things that you have further questions/thoughts about (minimum 3):

  • Just as it will take time to learn the vocabulary, it will take time to format precise google searches using the vocabulary.

  • There are many ways to achieve the same results, which benefits audiences who think differently.

  • Google is not the only tool.

  • Your key take-aways OR how you're going to implement specific points (minimum 3):

  • My career of the last ten years is advantageous. Remain adaptable and expect the unexpected. Big egos prevent growth.

  • Admit when you don't know something, then seek to understand.

  • Pair up whenever possible. Learn some extroversion skills.

  • Things that confused you OR things that you have further questions/thoughts about (minimum 3):

  • Although memorization isn't truly necessary, some aspects of the job will be made easier. What is the bare minimum?

  • What would a hiring manager think of this?

  • It'll be useful to remind myself that the humans are in charge when I'm frustrated.

  • Your key take-aways OR how you're going to implement specific points (minimum 2):
  • Google a lot, and google smartly! Memorization is generally not necessary.
  • Always remember that you're not the first person to encounter a problem.
  • Briefly describe (in your own words) each of the tips below AND provide an example of a search that captures the sentiment of the tip
  • Tip 2: Quotes will force a search for a full phrase, not just random appearances of the same words. “Best hot dog condiment”
  • Tip 3: Eliminate red herrings in your results. Georgia -Europe
  • Tip 4: If you know the site you're looking for, just cut to the chase. site:nytimes.com crossword
  • Tip 9: Don't be too specific if you're not sure what the right keyword is yet. enchilada OR burrito
  • Tip 13: Understand the author and audience, and speak like them. "keyboard shortcut switch tabs Chrome"
  • Tip 14: Make every word count. "organic restaurant nearby"
  • Tip 17: When one search doesn't help, search again with slightly different words.
