"content":"Red blood cells appear in the urine as colorless disks measuring approximately 7 microns in diameter. The finding of more than an occasional red blood cell in urine is considered abnormal. The presence of these cells is associated with damage to the glomerular membrane or vascular injury within the genitourinary tract. The number of cells counted is also an aid in determining the extent of the renal injury. Yeast cells are easily confused with red blood cells and should be observed closely for the presence of budding forms.",

"title":"White Blood Cells",
"content":"White blood cells are larger than red blood cells, measuring about 12 microns in diameter, but much easier to observe and identify because they contain cytoplasmic granules and lobed nuclei. Usually less than 5 leukocytes per high-power field are found in normal urine; however, higher numbers may be present in female urine. An increase in urinary white blood cells is called pyuria and indicates an infection or inflammation in the genitourinary system.",
