Arch Linux tweaks

This is a collection of the tweaks and modification I've made to my Arch Linux installation over the months. These may be applicable to other distros, but please check first before doing anything. I also included Arch Wiki references for all the procedures I mentioned. My recommendation is not to blindly follow this gist but to always check with the Arch Linux wiki first. Things move fast and by the time you're reading this my gist may be out of date. Lastly, the golden rule: never execute a command you don't understand.

Installing the KDE Plasma desktop

My current DE of choice is KDE's Plasma. I find it just about perfect.

There are various ways to install it on Arch. The most popular one is to install plasma and plasma-applications, but I don't like doing that because it comes with too many programs I'll never use. I, instead, install the base plasma group, remove the few extra packages that come with it, then I finish off by installing a few KDE apps that don't come with th

This puzzle has 3 parts:

• A i3wm config that opens mutt in a dedicated workspace. $mod+m will switch to this workspace and will launch mutt, if not already running. Actually it doesn't launch mutt, but…
• a small wrapper script, which opens a named pipe and then starts mutt.
• a checkmail script which uses mailcheck(1) to tara check mail. If new mail is available, it blinks the CAPS LOCK led (which I mapped to CTRL anyway) and marks the mutt workspace via a bell.

Additional configuration:

• set your terminal to mark urgent bells. In Termite the setting is "urgent_on_bell = true".
• adopt you ~/.mailcheckrc to include paths to your mailboxes. In the simplest case it contains just the line "$(HOME)/Maildir/INBOX"

Once upon a time there was a user that wanted to install firefox.

The user tried to do pacman -S firefox but it didn't work. The all mighty pacman reported that firefox-3.2.4-1.i686.pkg.tar.gz could not be found on his mirror. So the user tried pacman -Sy firefox. It worked and the user rejoiced since he could once again go and troll /h/.
