title: RND Automation & Engineering Overview
description: RND Automation & Engineering, LLC is Floridas premier custom machine builder. RND engineers, designs, manufactures and retrofits custom automation & material handing machinery for industries as diverse as hydraulic valves, automotive sensors, and contact lenses. Our projects range from fully automatic high-speed robotic work cells to operator assisted semi-automatic workstations. With our 20 years of experience in industrial machinery design, we provide our clients with production ready automated equipment that cuts labor costs and improves quality and production rates.
In a sagging economy, manufacturers are forced to look at their processes to remove any waste and lean their manufacturing workflows. Automating a task can help both to increase production and to decrease reject and scrap rates. Furthermore, removal of labor, often one of the highest components of the cost of a product, removes costs directly from the bottom line.
If you would like to discuss any possible automation projects please do not hesitate to call. We also would be happy to give you a tour of our facility so you can see some of our projects in person.

A very strong magnet holds the bearing "upside down" against a sheet of acrylic (yellowish sheet) which has a steel plate on top (opaque black-looking smaller piece). When shop air is applied, the bearing moves very easily. At the end of the vid, the air is turned off and the bearing cannot be pushed around.

title: Cleaving 100 Silicon Wafers
description: This is a demonstration of how I cleave 100 crystal orientation silicon wafers for my home chip lab. Choosing the wafer parameters outside of the 100 orientation will be covered in another video. <br />
<br />
For this you’ll need:<br />
Gloves, tweezers, an exacto knife or diamond scribe, zip lock storage bags and a soft surface, such as clean room wipes or a rubber mat. <br />
<br />
100 wafers have a crystal lattice line that runs perpendicular and parallel to the primary flat or on large wafers the notch. We’ll be taking advantage of this natural cleave direction to make square or rectangular pieces that are smaller and easier to handle. Other wafer crystal orientations will break into triangular shapes and will not be as convenient for later processes.<br />
<br />
The most common wafers you’ll run into will be polished on one side and dull on the other. Place the dull side down on the soft surface.<br />
<br />
Now gently nick the edge of either the primary flat or 90degs from the primary flat. I prefer nicking the primary flat, because it’s very intuitive where the break will happen. <br />
<br />
Take one half of the wafer and nick along the primary flat again to make a long thin strip.<br />
<br />
Rotate the strip 90 degrees and cleave smaller rectangles or squares.<br />
<br />
Rinse each piece preferably with deionized water and store one per zip lock bag to prevent scratches. Don’t forget to mark the wafer parameters on the bags. It can be difficult and inconvenient to determine what type later on.

title: computational modeling for cell trapping microfluidic device
description: To investigate the dynamics of the cell trapping process, the simulated loading of the individual trapping arrays and sieve conformations was analyzed at discrete time steps. Analysis of the figure reveals that the filling of the traps at the prescribed flow rate and cell concentration 1 micro Litter/min, 5000000 cells/mL occurs quite rapidly. By 30 s, most of the traps are fully occupied, with few cells added between 30 and 90 s.

title: Myvu Crystal wearable
description: One of my ambitions is to create a wearable computer. The most complicated part in this process is a head-mounted display. Recently, two-eye (goggle-style) head-mounted displays have seen an inexplicable upsurge in popularity, and as a result two-eye displays are actually substantially less expensive than their one-eye brethren.
Upon seeing a series of pictures showing how a Myvu Crystal display could be taken apart and turned into a one-eye display, I decided to do it myself. This is the result, a resounding success if I may say so myself.
The Myvu Crystal is an ideal candidate because:
1) The components for the two eyes are entirely detached, so all it takes to use only one eye's display is to remove the other.
2) Its resolution is 640x480, which is of course quite small for a "real" monitor, but is quite high for a cheap head-mounted display.
3) It's fairly hackable.

title: Carbon atoms moving at the edge of a hole in graphene
description: From the paper Science 27 March 2009: Vol. 323. no. 5922, pp. 1705 - 1708 DOI: 10.1126/science.1166999, "Graphene at the Edge: Stability and Dynamics," Çağlar Ö. Girit, Jannik C. Meyer, Rolf Erni, Marta D. Rossell, C. Kisielowski, Li Yang, Cheol-Hwan Park, M. F. Crommie, Marvin L. Cohen, Steven G. Louie, A. Zettl
The movie shows a high-resolution transmission electron microscopy study of the structure and dynamics of graphene at the edge of a hole in a suspended, single atomic layer of graphene. The injection of electrons causes ejection of carbon atoms, leading to rearrangement of the bonds at the edges into a zigzag configuration, which represents the most stable form.
Although the physics of materials at surfaces and edges has been extensively studied, the movement of individual atoms at an isolated edge has not been directly observed in real time. With a transmission electron aberrationcorrected microscope capable of simultaneous atomic spatial resolution and 1-second temporal resolution, we produced movies of the dynamics of carbon atoms at the edge of a hole in a suspended, single atomic layer of graphene. The rearrangement of bonds and beam-induced ejection of carbon atoms are recorded as the hole grows. We investigated the mechanism of edge reconstruction and demonstrated the stability of the "zigzag" edge configuration. This study of an ideal low-dimensional interface, a hole in graphene, exhibits the complex behavior of atoms at a boundary.

title: Frontman Kevin Warwick Promotes The Dehumanization Of Humanity
description: The transhumanist agenda is out in the open today. Kevin Warwick has spent the last few years promoting himself, and his "pioneering" work i.e. pretending that his own microchip implant was the first one of its kind. In reality, this was all done decades ago.
Now he is trying to persuade the public that we want a brain chip.
There have been international science meetings on the brainchip since 2001 - the first one was held at Loyola University, Louisiana.
Scientists at these meetings explained that the brainchips are ready now, and all that is necessary is to condition the public to accept them. They said that this would be done (not could be) by promoting them in movies, TV programmes, novels, cartoons for children, etc. This propaganda started years ago, and it will snowball in the near future.
Kevin Warwick is obviously part of this conditioning process, telling us that our brains are not good enough, and that because of obesity, our bodies are pretty worthless too.
Warwick hints at the end result of the brainchips, but he never openly explains what scientists at the Loyola Unversity meeting have admitted i.e. once there are enough people chipped, they will hear the buzzing of thoughts going back and forth between people's chips and the regional supercomputers (which are already set up) and this will be indistinguishable from their own thoughts. They admitted that it will be impossible to perceive of oneself as a separate distinct individual - just like the Borg, or the Cybermen.
In the following mp3 Alan Watt discusses Warwick and the agenda he is pushing:

The brainchip is a threat to human sentience. Unfortunately, many superficial people who live to "keep up with the Joneses" will unquestioningly accept one, having never valued their own individuality in the first place. They will swallow all the propaganda and fall for the marketing campaigns, because such people are extremely easy to manipulate.
The rest of us must refuse to become the Borg/Cybermen.

title: 70GB PDF library workflow on OSX
description: I have a 70GB library of textbooks and technical journal articles in (mostly) PDF format. I have been pleasantly surprised by the utility real-time full-text search provides for such a library - instead of browsing, I tend to access it the same way I access the web: by googling for phrases.<br />
<br />
Unfortunately, I dislike reading PDFs on my computer screen - I would like to access the library on a smaller, more portable, preferably e-ink device. I have a kindle 1 and an OLPC, both of which have the smaller form factor and tablet mode that I like. Unfortunately, the kindle 1 does not support PDF and my attempts at converting journal articles and textbooks have been unsatisfactory and unreliable at best. <br />
<br />
I would love to use the kindle, since it can provide ~8000 pages on a single 3-hour battery, is very light, and has a great screen, but I would be limited to whatever I could fit on an SD card (SDHC is unreliable but may work), and if I had converted the PDFs into images, I would lose the ability to search the content.<br />
<br />
The OLPC seems more promising. It's not light enough to comfortably hold for long periods of time, but I usually can find a way to prop it up on a knee or table. The battery only lasts 4 hours or so on a full charge, but it can natively display PDFs in tablet mode and has a remarkable screen that approaches e-ink in clarity (although not viewing angle). It can run debian & gnome, and I feel like there has got to be a good application out there for that environment built for managing large document collections and searching across them. It has like 2GB of built-in flash memory for the OS and an SDHC slot.<br />
<br />
Basically, I want iTunes for PDFs on Linux. With fast full-text search.<br />
<br />
Oh, I have my eye on the Kindle DX and the FoxIt eSlick e-ink readers. Both can display PDFs natively.<br />
<br />
Download the source of this video for more detail - it's only 60 megs and is 1280x720<br />
<br />
Also, I took some pictures comparing the screen of the Kindle 1 to the OLPC here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/macowell/sets/72157617953915215/

description: ChordGeometries represents chords and voice leadings in a variety of 3D geometrical spaces. You can enter chords on a MIDI keyboard or using the Keyboard window. Voice leadings between successive chords are represented by continuous paths in the spaces. The program is meant to accompany the paper "The Geometry of Musical Chords" [Science 313 (2006): 72-74]. Further information can be found in "Generalized Voice-leading Spaces," with Clifton Callender and Ian Quinn.<br />

title: UH 19XRW Hoverwing™ Ground Effect Hovercraft,
description: Universal Hovercraft is proud to offer the UH-19XRW Hoverwing™ ground-effect vehicle for industrial, commercial and military sales. It is available to our customers on a ready to run turnkey basis. The Hoverwing™, designed as a high performance hovercraft, is unique because of the ability to add wings for flight in ground-effect.
Flying in ground-effect enables you to clear obstacles and fly over rough water at speeds in excess of 75 mph. Cruise altitude is 2 to 6 feet and the craft can jump up to 20 feet to clear large obstacles. Operating in ground-effect does not require a pilots license, and the craft is registered as a boat which brings a wide range of new opportunities to the commercial and tourism industry.
Removing the wings from the Hoverwing™ takes just 10 minutes. With the wings removed the Hoverwing™ converts into Sport mode, a sleek high performance hovercraft, able to carry 4 to 6 passengers into areas that cant be reached with any other vehicle. The Hoverwing™ can be configured in many different ways to accommodate your passengers or equipment needs.
Notice: the 19XRW Hoverwing™ is not yet available for recreational use. Commercial, industrial, rescue, and military inquires only.

description: Two little mad scientists investigate Helium and Sulfer Hexafluoride. Rosie and Anna study Helium, a gas that is lighter than air, and Sulphur Hexafluorid (SF6), an inert gas that is much heavier than air. Just like the internet famous University of Bonn Physics Department Demonstration (Physikshow Uni Bonn) and Science Day displays they are able to magically float a small ship made of aluminum foil above the ground on a blanket of gas and then sink it by pouring the gas into the boat with a beaker. This is also known as the invisible water effect. Helium has the well known effect of raising the pitch of the voice. S6F has the opposite effect and lets you say things like "You're crazy man" (like Will Farrell in the movie Old School) or copy Darth Vader, "Luke, I am your father" (like James Earl Jones as Darth Vader in Star Wars). description: This was a very simple test to verify that my ERP was capable of grabbing and throwing a tennis ball. In no way did I optimize the throw, so I'm sure it can throw further after a bit of tweaking.
No sensors were used in this test, although in the long term the camera will track the orange ball before grabbing it.

title: Robot Chroma Key and Dance Demo
description: ERP using my Biped Engine v2 to dance through pre-programmed motions. A speed variable is increased to show that the engine can smoothly handle both really slow and really fast motions.
Chroma key was used to make one robot appear to be three. I actually filmed it three times, in three different locations, on a green floor, then combined the three together. If you look carefully, you'll see various chroma key artifacts that I didn't care to fix.
ERP is a fully opened sourced robot, with code and plans all available for you to download.
for more information on ERP:

ERP uses the Axon II microcontroller:

As for the background, I did all filming entirely in Thailand (where I often live for 6 months at a time). KMUTT supplied me the green floor and wall. The river pictures were from a recent trip I went on, and it just seemed to fit with my mood . . .

description: In 1998, when Kevin Warwick, researcher and Professor of Cybernetics at the University of Reading, England, implanted a silicon chip transponder into his left arm and connected it to his nervous system, he became the world's first cyborg: a man-machine hybrid. Some call Kevin Warwick a pioneer in the field of neuro-surgical implantation, others think he is a dangerous scientist who has gone crazy and wants to change mankind's evolution by creating a superior race: the cyborgs. In this video interview we talk about ultra-sonic senses, brain-to-brain telepathic communication, the therapeutic benefits of his experiments and why he think's he won't be the only cyborg on this planet in the future.

title: Real Time 3D Fluid and Particle Simulation and Rendering
description: This application uses a GPU based 3D fluid solver with a moving domain to seamlessly advect hundreds of thousands of particles. We use a globally second-order accurate fluid simulation method which takes constant calculation time, leading to a highly turbulent but stable simulation suitable for use in a real-time situation. In this demo our solver is used to simulate the turbulent wake behind a car, and we render smoke transported through that wake with a hardware-based volume renderer. The simulation domain is at a fixed position relative to the car, and we exploit Galilean invariance to transform the moving simulation domain into a motionless domain with inflow and outflow boundary conditions. Particles are advected through this fluid, but seamlessly transition to simple Newtonian dynamics as they leave the simulation domain. After simulation, the particles are sorted using a GPU-accelerated radix sort, and then rendered as alpha blended sprites with motion blur and volumetric shadows.

<br />
The released fat is naturally passed through the lymphatic system without negatively affecting cholesterol or triglyceride levels.<br />
<br />
Losing inches of fat from your hips, waist, and thighs could take months through diet and exercise. Now with ZERONA results can be seen in as little as two weeks with no pain, no surgery, and no recovery time.

#<ProbablyWorthWatching::Tweet:0x00000008c45178 @author="fenn", @content="so the $100 laptop has come and gone: http://www.liliputing.com/2009/11/menq-easypc-e790-80-and-still-barely-worth-it.html">
title: $80 Android Laptop, Menq EasyPC E790
description: Here is the cheapest laptop in the world. It can run Android since it is based on a Samsung ARM926EJ-S3C2450 processor, but for now this review unit that I am reviewing in this video only runs Windows CE 5.0. Check back hopefully within a month for another video when Menq may have sent me a firmware upgrade to use Android instead of Windows CE.
As I filmed the Menq Easypc E760 last year at IFA, Menq is a chinese company interested in providing the worlds cheapest laptop designs. Last year, they were using a 480x320 resolution 7-inch screen to reach the $89 price point for laptops, now they are able to include a 800x480 resolution 7-inch screen. Find more information about this Menq EasyPC E790 at http://www.menqgroup.com/products/pro/E790.asp
The coming of the ARM based laptops, in my opinion, are indicative of the real revolution that is imminent for the Laptop and Desktop computer industry. As soon as ARM based laptops can run a full Chrome Browser, with unlimited amounts of opened tabs all running smoothly, with Flash support, full Javascripts support and basic multimedia functions, then I think the turning point will be reached where most consumers in the world, and especially in developing countries, will be buying only the cheapest laptops.
Web Browsing is all that most people need, with clever HTML5 enabled Chrome browser running on any type of Embedded OS, be it Android or Ubuntu, even offline application could be run reliably from within the browser engine. Anything most people really need will work.
As you can see in my video review, this Menq EasyPC E790 is kind of slow since it is based on the ARM9 processor technology. For not much more cost, though, the Chinese laptop manufacturers could soon be using the ARM Cortex A8 processor technology, which should provide for a 5-10 times faster web browsing experience, and even faster if using an upcoming ARM optimized Chrome browser.
This laptop, I think, is giving us a taste of the future of laptops. Soon all laptops will cost $80 or less, run 10 hours or more on a small and cheap 3-cell battery, even over 20 hour battery life if using the Pixel Qi screen technology. It is also providing a sensation for the what we can expect from the next generation OLPC One Laptop Per Child XO-1.75 to be released by OLPC with ARM processor technology inside instead of X86.
If using ARM9, OLPC could definitely sell laptops at below $80, but maybe ARM Cortex A8 will be preferable at around $10-$20 extra in manufacturing costs, and the innovative new Pixel Qi screen, WiFi meshing, more RAM and storage, could bring the next ARM based OLPC XO-1.75 laptop coser to $125 per laptop, to reach below $100 with mass production. In any ways, I am really looking forward to see the upcoming releases of the ARM Cortex A8 based laptops, yet still, this ARM9 based laptop is very interesting, and if you want your local supermarket to start selling them, I suggest you phone your local supermarket headquarters, and ask them to contact Menq and order for example 5000 pieces or more so they can get them at the price of $80 per unit and sell it to you for probably below $100 in supermarkets.

title: Carve Steel with Saltwater, Electricity and a Tin Earring (BB Video + Theo Gray + Popsci.com)
description: Boing Boing Video (boingboingvideo.com) teamed up with Theo Gray and Popsci.com to produce this video that demonstrates how you can mold steel with electrochemical machining, using a soft, cheap piece of tin -- without any physical contact. Theo is the author of the book Mad Science, in which many other experiments like this are featured.
Theo says:
"I remember seeing a demonstration of a seemingly magic process at an engineering open house decades ago, in which a soft metal bit carved detailed shapes into far harder metals. It's called electrochemical machining (ECM), and it's so simple in principle that you can do it at home with a drill press, a battery charger and a pump for a garden fountain.
"ECM is basically electroplating in reverse. In electroplating, you start with a solution of dissolved metal ions and run an electric current through the liquid between a positive electrode and the object you want to plate (the negative side). The ions deposit themselves as solid metal onto the surface of the object."

description: Bryan Bishop and Ben Lipkowitz talk about how to make a civilization seed with SKDB (social knowledge engineering database). The concept is to leverage hackerspaces, fablabs and other groups around the world to shift the burden away from makers to a core group of package maintainers who verify hardware designs and make it easy for makers to do what they love best... which is making, of course! Everything in SKDB has both instructions and CAD files but also easy "outs"-- you probably don't want to make your own screws, so there's a "buy" button next to every "make" button.

Food for Thought w/ Malcolm Beck
Presented at the F.E.A.S.T. Summer Health Fair 2009
June 24th
The organic guru, himself, Malcolm Beck covers the following topics in an enlightening talk to an auditorium of home-schoolers :
The relationships between soil and our physical and mental health
• Poor nutrition and allergies, unsatisfied cravings, degenerative diseases,
impaired mental alertness, irritability, and depression
• How soil erosion, deforestation, and overgrazing have toppled empires
• Poor soil and over-processed, devitalized, chemical-laden foods.
• The importance of decaying organic matter, minerals & our earths soil
I apologize for the audio- the gymnasium isn't the best acoustic venue, even with a microphone. Hope everyone enjoys it.

title: The Venus Project London Lecture - October 2009 - Part 2 of 2
description: http://www.thevenusproject.com/
Part 2 of the Venus Project event in London held in October 2009. This is the first of two videos and covers the lecture by Jacque Fresco and Roxanne Meadows of The Venus Project.
Thanks to the Eerie Investigations team for filming this:
eerieinvestigations.com
The Venus Project presents a bold, new direction for humanity that entails nothing less than the total redesign of our culture. There are many people today who are concerned with the serious problems that face our modern society: unemployment, violent crime, replacement of humans by technology, over-population and a decline in the Earth's ecosystems.
As you will see, The Venus Project is dedicated to confronting all of these problems by actively engaging in the research, development, and application of workable solutions. Through the use of innovative approaches to social awareness, educational incentives, and the consistent application of the best that science and technology can offer directly to the social system, The Venus Project offers a comprehensive plan for social reclamation in which human beings, technology, and nature will be able to coexist in a long-term, sustainable state of dynamic equilibrium.
http://www.thezeitgeistmovement.com/
The Goal
The Means is the End:
We intend to restore the fundamental necessities and environmental awareness of the species through the advocation of the most current understandings of who and what we truly are, coupled with how science, nature and technology (rather than religion, politics and money) hold the keys to our personal growth, not only as individual human beings, but as a civilization, both structurally and spiritually. The central insights of this awareness is the recognition of the Emergent and Symbiotic elements of natural law and how aligning with these understandings as the bedrock of our personal and social institutions, life on earth can and will flourish into a system which will continuously grow in a positive way, where negative social consequences, such as social stratification, war, biases, elitism and criminal activity will be constantly reduced and, idealistically, eventually become nonexistent within the spectrum of human behavior itself.
