Aristotle points out that Firefox has a non-sidebar history UI, under History→ Show All History, which actually has the features I was missing (like the ability to see and sort by the time of the most recent visit).

Also I enthusiastically agreed that the sidebar history viewer blows hard, once I remembered that it even exists, which I had forgotten because I never use it, which is because, well, it blows hard.

So this story ends with happy @kragen, hopefully. 😃

is there a reason for it being so shockingly unusable? it doesn't just look bad, it is genuinely difficult to use.

Got here by the same means everyone is. Utterly fucking useless history section. Firefox always fucking sucks. Never fixes anything that actually helps people. Maybe this will help someone: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/mozilla_history_view.html
