Keywords are added to bookmarks. Open the Bookmark Manager. When adding or editing a bookmark, the bottom/fourth field is Keyword
.
Install the SafariKeywordSearch extension and enable it.
Note that the search URLs in this table are in Firefox format to more easily identify where the wildcard is in the URL. SafariKeywordSearch uses @@@
as its wildcard substitution string, whereas Firefox bookmarks and Chromium-based (Edge, Vivaldi, Chrome, et al) Search Engines use %s
.
Keywords are maintained as a search engine in Chromium-based browsers. These can be located at chrome://settings/searchEngines
(Chromium derived browsers will typically forward chrome:
protocol pages to their own protocol, such as edge:
and opera:
). Click Add. While editing the new (or editing a current) search engine, take note of the middle field is labeled Keyword
.
Note that Search Engines do not currently sync with user profiles across devices. I am only aware of Edge having this functionality on their roadmap. There are currently no working Extensions to add this functionality. You can, however, manually copy the values by opening the SQLite database where they're stored.
For example, the Edge Web Data
database is stored:
Platform | Default Path |
---|---|
Linux | ~/.config/microsoft-edge/ |
Mac | ~/Library/Application Support/Microsoft Edge/Default/Web Data |
Windows | %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\Default\Web Data |
Specific to me, either for usefulness or based on location, but provided to maybe inspire ideas.
Searches are performed directly on the search engine.
Quick access to browser functionality.
Mozilla Firefox and its derivitives use the about:
protocol.
Name | Keyword | URL |
---|---|---|
Firefox: About | fxabout |
about:about |
Firefox: Add-ons Manager | fxa |
about:addons |
Firefox: Advanced Preferences | fxc |
about:config |
Firefox: Book of Mozilla | fxb |
about:mozilla |
Firefox: Downloads | fxd |
about:downloads |
Firefox: Networking | fxn |
about:networking |
Firefox: Process Manager | fxproc |
about:processes |
Firefox: Profiles | fxprof |
about:profiles |
Firefox: Settings | fxp |
about:preferences |
Firefox: Support | fxsup |
about:support |
Many of the browsers will redirect the chrome:
protocol to the variant used with a particular brower, such as edge:
or opera:
.
