4 Proposals to Improve Touch-football

1: Abolish touch-rule (QB sneaks)

Problem:

Currently, a teammate may touch the ball, and the quarterback may rush for yards. This rule is abused on too many plays, and makes the game much less fun.

Solution:

Until possession of the ball changes, neither the quarterback or defense can cross the line of scrimmage.

2: Exclude offside members on kickoffs

Problem:

Offside defenders can "tackle" (touch) the kick returner immediately upon reception, not giving the returner any opportunity to return the ball. The defense may also throw the ball at an offside member of the offense. While both of these tactics are currently legal, they almost always cause the offense to be upset.

Solution:

On kickoffs only, Offside members are considered spectators. That is, they cannot participate in the kickoff.

3: Verbally announcing "We're not ready" automatically nullifies the play

Problem:

Sometimes when the offense starts the play before the defense is ready, the defense complains. Then, if the offense gains yards, the defense claims the play doesn't count because they weren't ready. However, if the the offense fails to gain yards (e.g., because of incomplete pass), then the defense counts the play as valid.

Solution:

If the defense verbally says they're not ready, the play is automatically nullified.

4: Half-assed defense

Problem:

Some teams don't try on defense. While we can't expect players to be playing at their best everyday, explicitly ordering your team to intentionally allow your opponent to score is definitely unsportsmanlike and makes the game much less fun.

Solution:

I can't think of any rule that solves this problem, so I think we should just ask the offenders to stop. I don't think they are intentionally trying to ruin the game, they just don't realize that without defense, offense is too easy.
