SwiftUI Compiler Internship at Apple

Apple's SwiftUI team is now looking for interns for 2024!

This is a paid internship. While most internships last 3 months, starting in May or June, the start date and internship length are flexible. Internships are restricted to students pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in the U.S. or Canada. Students must be enrolled in school in the quarter/semester immediately following the internship.

Key Qualifications

  • Familiarity with compiler infrastructures (e.g. Swift, Clang, LLVM, MLIR)
  • Proficiency with Swift and C++ (or the capacity to become proficient quickly)
  • Familiarity with programming language design and implementation
  • The ability to work collaboratively and explain complex ideas clearly
  • High standards for quality and attention to detail

Description

As an intern on the SwiftUI team, you will work on the core infrastructure of SwiftUI and Swift Charts to help push the expressivity and performance of our API to the next level. You will also contribute to the open-source Swift programming language and draft proposals to Swift Evolution. You will be responsible for bringing your ideas to life through all stages of their development: from initial research, to language design and proposals, to testing and development in Swift and C++, to demoing to management. You’ll join us in energetic discussions on each other’s work and ideas, alongside members of other teams possessing a variety of different perspectives and domain expertises.

The SwiftUI team is responsible for the core SwiftUI and Swift Charts frameworks and works closely with UI framework teams across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS. You’ll also have the opportunity to collaborate with experts throughout Apple including: Swift compiler engineers, graphics engineers, programming language designers, and API designers. Curious and enterprising individuals who take an expansive view of their role will thrive in this multi-disciplinary environment!

Education

Pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Computer Science or related fields.

Additional Experience

Experience with any of the following is a plus, but not required:

  • Design of compiler intermediate representations and virtual machines
  • Swift language design and Swift Evolution
  • SwiftUI or other UI frameworks
  • Type systems
  • Technical writing
  • Open-source software projects
