message since the start of the pandemic i've slept in maybe 6 bedrooms.

message when covid hit new york i was living with X. the apartment was loud. we lived above a mexican restaurant open til 4am with a back patio and loud music. across the street was a competing mexican restaurant that opened streetside eating. i couldn't work in the front room or the back room due to the noise and had trouble getting to sleep before 4am.

message during the time of the pandemic lots of people report having peculiar dreams. "all around the world, the pandemic provoked strange nocturnal visions" said the new york times. me, i've always had trouble remembering my dreams when i wake up.

message in the first week the pandemic broke out in new york i had an exhibit. i didn't go to the opening but zoomed in. everyone seemed to think things would go back to normal soon. x and i thought this was wishful thinking. we lived in a small apartment in a gridlocked zone. for the first time with some means, we left the city. we rented an apartment near a state park in central jersey.

message the house was spare but huge to us. we weren't used to suburban  living. we had many rooms and space to spread out and were a block from a big park where i could go mountain biking. we saw many deer. read out in the sun. removed ticks. out there i could sleep. it was so quiet. if boring. but it was boring everywhere. we had two bedrooms. we switched off.

message it's a year later. i live alone above my friend and his family. one of my closest friends passed away this year. i still can't believe it. living online, i've rolled with this new life, but i miss going out, doing things. i miss many things. dancing with friends, biking home from parties. feeling free. occasionally i can, but not like before.

message a few times i've gone to stay with my parents. i take the train down to them, visiting other friends back home too. my parents live in the suburbs. on the edge of the woods. there are deer, foxes, many birds. at night it rains and owls call out, the cats purr. i refuse to sleep on the fold-out bed. i sleep right on the floor on a thick shag carpet and blankets.

message i'm enjoying spending time with them as we all age. i appreciate the hell out of them. we talk and talk. at night we watch documentaries. they go to bed at midnight and i raid the kitchen. they've bought me pretzels i like.

message for the past year i've had trouble falling asleep. i read too late, look at my phone, browse, program, hear animals, loud cars. i finally fall asleep at 4am. i see less and less of the day. 

message in the summer i visit a friend in berlin and do a residency in denmark with riends from my art collective, we're all part of an extended family. none of us have kids. at 39, i'm the young one in the group. we're all weirdos. we stay up late in our hostel room talking, making noise, playing backgammon. john and i snore we are told. with my friends i'm the happiest i've been all pandemic

message back home i throw myself into school. at night, i don't wanna go to bed. i want it quiet. i want the world for myself. when i'm asleep i'll be nowhere. i'll be missing out. 

message some nights i watch old, slow movies. i watched a 1940s western starring john wayne.  lots of nights of the cowboys sleeping under the stars, afraid of what's ahead, what's behind, and death all around. "it's funny what the night does to a man" says the camp cook.


message when i wake it's late. i'm slow to leave bed, make tea, head out into the world reluctantly. i hope to get out, but where to go? things are uncertain. where will i be sleeping next year?
