Backpack

backpackit.com

The first of a trio of 37 Signals' tools in our round-up, Backpack is one of those web applications that once you've been using it for a while, you wonder how you lived without it. Use it to make notes, to-do lists, store files or share information. You can post information to a Backpack page via email, and paste an iframe into a note to display, for example, a Google Calendar. The free version of Backpack is limited to five pages, but for $7 (about £4.75) per month, you get 100 pages and a shared calendar. Best of all, it's a joy to use.

Basecamp

Managing projects where team members work remotely is challenging to say the least. Basecamp, from 37 Signals, is an excellent solution to the headache. You can add team members and set their access rights, so they only see or edit those parts of the projects with which they're involved; set milestones and due dates, and share them with iCal; and use the included Writeboard to share information. Change a milestone date and the dates of dependent milestones are changes automatically. The free plan is limited to one project with an unlimited number of users. Paid-for plans start at $24 (about £16.25) per month.

Highrise

37 Signals' Highrise is a contact manager that integrates well with Basecamp. You can import contacts from vCard capable applications such ass Address Book, or from Entourage or Excel spreadsheets or CSV files. Deals and leads can be tracked, telephone conversations noted down then reviewed and you can even ask Highrise to send you a text message reminding you to call or email a contact. The free version allows you to have two users and up to 250 contacts, while for $24 (about £16.25) per month, you can have six users, 5000 contacts and track 10 deals at once.
