- Tonight, our subject is Open Data
- Let us maintain an open exchange
- All opinions are valuable and welcomed
- We are not here to promote stuff
- Nomen est omen

Bonjour #OpenDataBeer !
Je suis ...
- IT guy/ activist/ russe/ Canadien/ KΓΆnizer
- EPFL, ETH, Cisco, Opendata, Datalets, Cividi
- Civic tech organizer / open source maintainer
- @loleg on twt+gh+lkdin+insta+hack.opendata
... and I π to code & tinker with friends
Hackdays are a kind of e-sport where participants make playful use of tech resources to stretch their data within strict time constraints. π₯
We started keeping time for open data in 2011
This precursor of opendata.swiss, our MAKE wiki became a treasure trove of information about data resources, various attempts to develop applications, and the people in our community.
The old projects have been archived, and can now be searched and downloaded at https://github.com/opendatach/makeopendata-archive
dribdat is the new black.., er, wiki ;-)
Since 2016 the community mostly documents at hack.opendata.ch, along with a number of other sites linked at dribdat.cc
- Swiss made software :flag-ch:
- Open source goodness π
- Open Data in the kernel π
- Multiplatform to the bone π
- More awesome hackathons π
- It's fun to "dribble" with "data" π
But wait! Why not just use
- Yes, you should use CKAN!
- we already use CKAN-Embed on many events
- much of the software architecture is aligned
- dribdat should be (in) a CKAN extension #212
- let's close the loop! π€
Look for this button (OAuth FTW!) to create a profile.
Find your group's project (or start it), then take the blue pill.
Post progress reports and Sync or Edit the docs.
The Sync feature is a lightweight harvester, federating documentation content from git repositories, wikis, cloud editors, or practically any open Web location.
Shared text documents, a folder full of sketches, new datasets, a code repository, slideshows and any other online materials can be showcased in this manner. The most actively developed prototype is shown at the top, links to any relevant materials in the readme and log.
There is an API plus built-in export and visualization tools, as well as proven integrations like Discourse & Disqus for quick evaluation and commentary to motivate sustained development.
Use the platform to keep focused on the essential work of opening and promoting data sources, not worrying about whether your efforts will count. For organizers, this is a powerful instrument to accelerate their teams and boost overall impact.
π THERE IS MORE π We could keep talking about:
- Streamlining people processes on- and offline
- Assuring tolerance & promoting diversity
- Making issues visible to solve them better
- Making a bigger impact on policy and planet
- Not losing focus on the essentials
- Acknowledging participation
- Digitalizing sustainably
But our time is up.

π§ Let's hack on open data with people at heart
π I maintain dribdat so you get awesome data
We are not here to promote anything tonight, but if you want to support some of the things you heard about, you can do so at opendata.ch, dribdat.cc, GitHub, OpenCollective or AlternativeTo.
Thank you to everyone who has already helped to make this hack into something more.
We want you to join hack4socialgood.ch on December 11-13, 2020
