Why we should support local (Indonesian) game developers.

This gist is made specifically for my English assignments. If you spotted any grammar mistakes or wanted to discuss about this, leave a comment down below! :)

Thesis

Many people played video games to kill their spare time; like Mobile Legends, PUBG, Free Fire, etc. Just to name a few. Those games were made by known multi-billionare game developers like Moonton, Tencent Games, Garena. Those developers were based on countries outside of Indonesia.

Are there any games that were made by game developers in Indonesia? Why should we support them?

Why?

Yes, there are games made by local game developers. In case you didn't know, I'll mention some of them here.

There are Tahu Bulat (Round Tofu), Aku si Juragan Empang, Warnet Life (formerly Warnet Simulator), A Space for the Unbound, Troublemaker (formerly Parakacuk), and so on. You can look for these games on Google to find out more.

The question still remains: "Why should we support local game developers?"

To answer this question, let's have a look on current state of local game development company. According to CNBC, local gamedev companies are struggling to compete with other game company. The Project Director of Prodigy Infotech, Robinson stated that it was difficult for game developers to grow without proper support from the local government.1

They also stated that government from other countries supported the company from funding, education, and infrastructure. This could be the reason why other company could grow rapidly in game industry. 1

A famous influencer and also an entrepreneur, Raymond Chin said that the majority of us play games made by developers outside of Indonesia, thus the games made by local developers are left unnoticed. Many gamedev company can't keep up due to our lack of interest to local games.2

Two months ago, the game A Space for the Unbound got nominated on The Game Awards 2023 on "Games on Impact" category.34 The game has received a positive reviews5 thanks to their work on crafting an outstanding story of two high-school teenager. It's really hard nowadays to get a game made by a local game developer nominated on an international game awards.

How can we support them?

How can we support them as an Indonesian citizen? We can support them by playing their game, give some constructive feedbacks on their game, share their game to your friends, and buy their products. If you can't do any of those, at least try to appreciate their hard work developing the game.
