You are now chatting with 'Mike C'
Mike C: Hello. Thank you for visiting our chat service. May I help you with your order today?
You: hello
Mike C: How can I help you today?
You: i am trying to figure out if it is possible ot add a second line to an existing phone
Mike C: You can add a line online by signing into your My Verizon and clicking Add a New Device on the main page. It will ask you to upgrade to a shared plan since you would be coming from a single line.
You: so i am already on a shared plan with 2 lines and devices. i want to add an additional line that points to one of those existing devices such that the device will have 2 lines
You: perhaps it is best if i describe what i am ultimately trying to achieve
Mike C: Do you mean you want two numbers on the same phone?
You: i have a phone number pointing to a phone on my shared plan. I also have a google voice account with it's own number. I would like to swap those who numbers. Google voice does allow transferring numbers in/out of their system. Based on what I can gather I should be able to do the following: Transfer my google voice number to my verizon phone while keeping the existing one on the same phone. Then once the number is ported I would then port my previous verizon number into my google voice account
You: let me know if that is not clear
You: so because of this there will be a temporary time where 2 numbers would need to point to my cell phone
Mike C: Yes, that would work. You can set up the google voice number to port when you order the new line, then after it's activated and ported to that new line, then port your other lines number into google voice. That line will need to be off contract to port it to google voice without an early termination fee though.
You: ugh
You: so i could not do this without a cancelation fee
You: i just want to swap the numbers, not cancel my service
Mike C: Porting a number automatically cancels the line it comes from, unfortunately.
You: what if i do the "change my number" option in my account and say I want to port an existing number.
Mike C: Oh ok, that should work, if it lets you port the number out while giving that line a new number.
You: so from verizons standpoint that would be okay and not cause a termination fee.
You: what would happen to my existing verizon number?
You: the goal is to save that number (by moving it to google voice)
Mike C: That would port that existing number to google voice, and give that line a brand new number to avoid it being terminated.
You: Sorry, I do not follow. If I said i wanted to just change my Verizon number by porting my existing google voice number which would not mean i would have to pay a termination fee what happens to the old verizon number?
